Tips For A Well Chosen Fireplace

By Dalvin Rumsey

Imagine a cold winter evening…you and your loved one sitting by the fireplace with the fire making the room all cozy and warm…there is no single person on Earth who wouldn't like such an evening! The bad thing in all of this is the fact that you must first choose the right fireplace for your home. Only then will you be able to enjoy the coziness of the fire in your own home.

The fireplace you choose to install depends on your type of home, your energy needs and your design preferences. These are the things to think about before making the final decision.

The masonry fireplaces are the ones to use if you want to heat an entire small home. The new models are much more energy-efficient than they used to be in the past, when they provided more ambience than warmth. In terms of prices, there is no general rule, as the cost can vary depending on the type of material used for the fireplace face. Another factor to determine the price of such a fireplace is the hearth. May it be made out of brick, stone, concrete, tile, marble or wood, these all play their part in the final cost of the fireplace.

Another type of fireplace that is commonly used nowadays is the prefabricated fireplace. Also known as zero-clearance fireplaces, they are highly insulated, so they can be installed within an inch of combustible materials, such as wall framing. The prefabricated fireplaces are much lighter in weight, faster and easier to install than standard masonry units. This is why they are used almost all newly built houses. Another advantage of the prefabricated fireplaces is the fact that they are very efficient in terms of energy. The most modern fireplaces of this kind are prefabricated from metal and installed in wood-frame walls.

Should you decide for a wood stove, you must be aware of the fact that this is actually a metal container for the fire. A wood stove has an inlet for combustion air and an outlet for combustion gases or smoke and it is made from cast iron or brick-lined, welded plate steel. Modern stoves allow the amount of combustion air that feeds the flame to be controlled, so that it burns more efficiently than any other traditional fireplace.

So, there are plenty of fireplaces to choose from. The decision is up to you!
