Book Review: Magnetic Sponsoring by Mike Dillard

By Donovan Baldwin

I was a little put off when I opened Mike Dillard's book on how to get the best MLM leads. I had expected to be sold to. After all, I am an internet marketer and network marketer myself. I know that almost any good marketer is going to include testimonials as to the value of his or her product. I wouldn't have minded a blatant sales ad right up front, even though it might have been in questionable taste.

In this case, I thought that beginning the book with three pages of testimonials by 11 people was overdoing it a bit. And where was the sales pitch?

As I began to read, however, I lost interest in my momentary pique and became absorbed in Mike's message, and his message was not JUST about getting leads...or maybe it was!

On the second page of Chapter 1, two statements in particular met my eye:

"95% of the people who join this industry do so without the intention of becoming a 'professional network marketer,' yet that is exactly what is asked of you if you wish to make a full-time/six-figure income. They simply join because they were sold on the idea that they could quit their job and work from home if they just buy a distributorship and call some leads."

And...

"Our job is to teach them correct concepts and methods, and to tell them what they need to hear...Not just what they want to hear."

I felt an affinity to Mike at that moment because I have been hammering on these two points for several years myself. So many people enter network marketing full of unrealistic expectations and ignorance, and are then left in the cold by the ones who recruited them.

The difference is, of course, that Mike Dillard has gone to the trouble of writing a book about it and creating a method to help these newcomers to network marketing achieve success.

From this start, Mike goes on through such instructional chapters as Being a Professional, Finding Your Target Market, How to Use Positioning and Attraction, Funded Proposals, An Introduction to Magnetic Sponsoring, and Retailing with Magnetic Sponsoring.

Mike combines genuine, relevant instruction with opinion and examples to provide the meat of the Magnetic Sponsoring concept. At the same time, winding through every page is Mike's personal belief that to get more you have to give more. He expresses this attitude at one point through a quote from Joe Schroeder, "The only thing you can take with you when you die is all that you have given away."

Through his program of Magnetic Sponsoring, Mike definitely intends to do something about the time of his living, but he is definitely leaving the reader with something he has given them.

After several pages of teaching the "correct concepts and methods" of the principles and practice of Magnetic Sponsoring, Mike gives away something that definitely meets the purpose of changing a newcomer into a professional. He offers a free, complete lead generating system to the reader.

This is an excellent book for someone new to network marketing, especially if they are terrified about approaching leads or if they lack the money to buy large blocks of qualified leads. While it is not quite as important for an experienced, successful marketer, even with my years of experience, I was able to find several nuggets of value in its pages, and found, that on re-reading the book, and a series of emails for which I also signed up, I kept coming up with new ideas and insights.
