Ten facts you might not know about television

By the time the average U.S. kid reaches eighteen years of age they would have spent about 25000 hours watching television. This means they would have actually spent more time watching Television than learning in class.

The first ever colour television transmission occurred in John Logie Baird’s British studio back in 1928.This transmission showed some blue and red scarves and a British policeman's headgear. Also pictured was a mixed bunch of flowers, a guy poking his tongue out and the burning end of a cigarette.

The first Television advert in history lasted 20 seconds and was for a timepiece manufactured by a corporation called Bulova. This corporation also made the first ever timepiece that went into space. The advert was seen in July 1941 and went out during a game being played by the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies.

The famous revolving globe that is utilized by the NBC evening news program spent many years revolving in the wrong direction. In 1984 this was eventually discovered and on January 2nd this was rectified and now the globe is turning correctly.

The 1st toy ever advertised on television was the "Mr potato head" product. He was brought to the focus of millions of U.S TV viewers and even now can be viewed in the ever popular "Toy story" animated productions.

The biggest ever fee given to run a TV add was $2,000,000 per thirty seconds of time. This was given by companies to play their adds during the very last American screening of the famous comedy series friends. The show was aired by American TV company NBC on May 6 2004 and lasted for a whole hour.

The worlds largest television set was unveiled in the Japanese city of Tsukuba and measured 24.3m by 45.7m [ 80ft by 150ft ]. It was utilized in the 1985 Japanese International Exposition and displayed a series of specially commissioned films containing various artistic and cultural creations.

The most amount of adverts starring a corporate president were made for Wendy's Hamburger restaurants in the United States and featured Dave Thomas the corporations creator. In all he has featured in 652 ads with the shortest being 5 seconds and the longest being sixty seconds. These commercials have won thirty six major advertising awards and have made Dave as well known as his Products.

Whilst viewing an episode of the hit Japanese kids show Pokemon over seven hundred Japanese schoolkids were rushed to hospital with severe convulsions and trauma. This was caused by a ten second part in which the programs hero Pikachu flashed his huge red eyes to the sound of a big booming explosion.

In the States the largest proportion of the Television audience is made up of pre-school youngsters. Onaverage their weekly tv consumption works out to be in the region of 30.4 hours which means by the age of 17 they would have amassed as much as 15000 hours of television watching. Unbelievably this adds up to a staggering two years of non stop viewing.
