keep Young And Healthy With Antioxidants

By David Bickerdyke

There are many processes that take place in our body, even
at the cellular level. Some of these processes are
detrimental and produce free radicals that damage the cell
wall, structure and genetic material. Antioxidants are
those natural chemicals that are found in our body. These
counteract the effects of free radicals. Antioxidants can
also be added to the ones existing in your body with a
proper diet and supplements.

Vitamin supplements of vitamin A, C, E and selenium, all
contain antioxidants. These are consumed orally and come in
the form of capsules, tablets and soft gels. Supplements
are commonly available at pharmacies, health food stores
and even grocery stores.

It is advisable to pick up a multi antioxidant pack rather
than a single one. Supplements are taken to enhance the
natural diet and not as a replacement for the same. For
individuals suffering from any health condition and who are
undergoing treatments of prescribed drugs, it is
recommended that they consult their physician before adding
supplements to their diet.

A physician can best advise the correct dosage of
supplements to be taken that will compliment an ongoing
treatment. For normally healthy individuals, antioxidant
supplements are free from side-effects and safe to use.

Research has shown that although supplements are good for
you, they do not have nearly the same benefits of eating
fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants in their
natural forms. Foods, such as onions, tomatoes, grapes,
pomegranates and green tea, all are good sources of
antioxidants. Antioxidants are also found in herbs such as
garlic and rosemary.

It has been found that antioxidants are good for preventing
several ailments. Vitamin E is known to prevent the onset
of heart disease whereas Vitamin C helps to control blood
pressure. Incredibly, antioxidants have been known to help
prevent diseases like diabetes and even certain cancers.

Antioxidants can also help to slow the aging process by
delaying the appearance of wrinkled skin and muscle
degeneration. The benefits of antioxidants are many and
with the right level of antioxidant consumption,
life-threatening diseases like heart disease, cancer and
diabetes can be successfully thwarted. Because they occur
naturally in fruits, vegetables and herbs, a well balanced
diet consisting of foods containing antioxidants is
recommended.

This is the best way to augment one's diet. In case, your
diet is lacking these foods, you may take supplements to
enhance the same. Taking supplements twice a day with your
meals is a recommended habit.

Take note of the above advantages of antioxidants and be
sure to include them in your diet.
