E-Learning—The Truth Exposed Discover Why Organisations The World Over Are Adopting E-Learning

By Sarvadarshi Rajgrihar

You've known about the success of e-learning for quite some time now. You've probably attributed this to various factors — cost-savings, convenience, easy logistics, higher levels of user involvement, etc. While you're absolutely right on all counts, there is one other earth-shattering fact — a recent finding that's triggered a new wave of e-learning initiatives across organisations. Finally, the truth about why everybody's switching to e-learning is out in the open.

E-learning offers a far higher completion rate than any other training/learning initiatives. This fact, uncovered by a recent PWC study, explains why organisations are eager to switch from conventional learning to e-learning. Trainers have always been perturbed by the number of managers who "are learning", "will complete the programme shortly" and "are slightly busy now but will resume the programme later". The stark truth is that completion rates have always been abysmally low.

The PWC study, carried out in conjunction with Manchester NHS Trust, indicates that e-learning can deliver a completion rate as high as 93 to 95 per cent! The corresponding rates for conventional training are, of course, difficult to find out; trainers and HR Managers are just too embarrassed to give out the real figures.
The study also analysed the reasons for the high completion rate offered by e-learning, attributing it to:

• Flexibility (the convenience of being able to choose time and place)
• Non-intrusiveness (doesn't disturb the learner's schedule)
• Customisation of pace (according to the learner's abilities)
• Self-test methods (learners are known to frequently skip conventional classes if they aren't prepared for tests)
• Deeper involvement levels (emanating from the one-on-one format)

Yet another intriguing pointer drawn from the findings indicates that learners undergoing e-learning are eager to continue the learning process by undergoing other e-learning programmes. Every training manager's dream come true!
