For The Bookworm

By Rahul viz

The University of Amsterdam has a huge library with books and publications from all over world. One cannot picture the library as a single building or a row of buildings in which all the books are stored and displayed. The Library of the UvA is located in a range of buildings all over Amsterdam. In addition to the central UvA Library (commonly known as UB) which is located at the Singel, one can find faculty libraries. When taken as a whole all these libraries have around four million volumes and a large collection of manuscripts.

The online guide to the international academic world is known as the World of Learning. It is the standard reference work for any simple information, like contact data especially on academic institutions world-wide. These institutions include universities, research centers, libraries and archives, museums and learned societies. The data which can be collected on these institutions include postal address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail and internet address, members of staff, corporate journals, quite often and a mission statement as well as quantitative data. The library gives search results of eminent professors from all over the world. The database for the professors can be retrieved by means of institutional name, people (members of staff), country as well as subject.

The UvA Digital Academic Repository (commonly known as UvA-DARE) is a service which includes national and international network of scientific and scholarly information services. Any author who wants to store the electronic version of his/her publication can do it safely through UvA-DARE. The digital repository is managed by the Library of the Universiteit van Amsterdam. Through the repository the references of one's publications becomes available within the international network of information services. As a result of which the visibility of one's publications is increased. The UvA Digital Academic Repository also makes available publications of hundreds of other UvA authors. At any given time there is a maximum of 4 simultaneous users.
