Technical Writing: A New Way of Writing

By James Marriot

Technical writing is all about providing simple and readable information on the most difficult of technical subject, so that the readers can easily learn the latest technology. It includes preparing catalogues & operating manuals, promotional material, assembly instructions, project proposals and many more. Besides this, they also prepare and edit diagrams & illustrations in a technical document. The technical writers and engineers work together to translate difficult engineering specifications in a simple and understandable language.

With new software packages and new technologies emerging every day, the market need of technical writers is increasing at a very fast speed. The companies are constantly looking for professionals who have the potential and want to get into the field of technical writing.

Basically there are three trends that have emerged for technical writers all over the world. The trends are:

· Outsourcing- instead of internal the costs are shifted to external.

· Off-shoring-the work of technical documentation is sent to the countries overseas.

· Single-sourcing-a single content file is used for creating multiple documents.

To become a technical writer you need to be a graduate in English or hold a technical degree or diploma or both. You should at least have the knowledge of word processing or any publishing software.

There are some companies that require the technical writing candidate to have knowledge of programming languages such as Java, Oracle Finance or C++ etc.

However, knowledge of software packages such as Rob help and Adobe PageMaker are considered as added qualifications for the job of a technical writer.

The technical writers are put through a few training sessions, so that they can learn about the new technology they are going to write documentation for. Take an example of a networking company, they provide their technical writers with the basic knowledge of networking.

The pre-requisites of a technical writer include:

· Well versed in English language.

· Possess a degree in English or a degree/diploma in some technical field

preferably IT.

· Has got an understanding of technology.

· Flair and aptitude for technical manual writing.

With more and more companies writing the outsourced or contractual documentation for clients, the demand for technical writers is sure to grow even higher in the years to come. The technical writing companies in India can benefit from endless opportunities in this field that are yet to arrive, as these companies offer a comparatively less expensive and quality oriented technical documentation.

Technical writing profile is attracting more and more professionals due to the higher salary and job satisfaction. The profile of a technical writer not only offers great rewards in terms of money it also provides the writer with the latest information on the current technology. A full time technical writer earns $25,000 to $28,000 annually, whereas a freelancer can make even more money in this profession.

Though technical writing requires a good command over written English and some knowledge of technologies around, the aptitude towards writing is the key to success in this profession.
