Things to consider when buying a pool

By Jeff Lakie

If you're trying to decide between an above ground pool and an in-
ground pool, here are some things to consider before you go out and
buy one.

¡¤ Shape: In-ground pools come in a variety of shapes (oval,
square, kidney-shaped, or a combination) while above
ground pools are typically only round or oval.
¡¤ Size: Above ground pools are smaller than in-ground pools,
which can come in a variety of sizes to suit your needs. Of
course, you'll spend less money on water but you'll also limit
yourself to what you can do in your pool.
¡¤ The Deep End: An above ground pool cannot have a diving
board because only some above ground pools have a deep
end but they generally are only 6 feet which is not appropriate
to dive from a greater height.
¡¤ Expense: Above ground pools are quite a bit cheaper than in-
ground pools, sometimes only a quarter of the cost, so they
are much more affordable. Sometimes under $1000.
¡¤ The Full Cost: What you save by buying a cheaper above
ground pool, you may spend by building a deck and erecting
a taller fence in order to maintain your privacy. An in-ground
pool does not require a deck since you can walk on the
ground and a fence only has to be regular height for your
privacy.
¡¤ Installation: You can often install an above ground pool
yourself by simply following the manufacturer's instructions.
An in-ground pool will require a professional to install
properly, adding to the expense.

So which is the right one for you? It all comes down to what you want
to do in the pool. Are you swimming laps? Are your children splashing
around for fun? Are you teaching swimming lessons? Do you have the
space to have a pool and other backyard space? Will your children
use one type of pool now and a different kind in the future?

Above ground pools are good choices for group play, such as a fun
game the water pulled over splashing around in the water on a hot
afternoon. An in-ground pool, while more expensive, probably
provides greater versatility because it also allows you to swim laps and
have a slide and diving board.
