On-ice programs are a must in the curriculum of goalie schools; they offer the trainee the chance to get a taste of what the game is going to feel like in real situations. As a rule, goalie training on ice is adopted by goalie schools on a daily basis. On-ice programs mean a lot of effort involved in intense, demanding drills in order to get the body used to the great physical challenges that the game demands.

Throughout such programs, the interaction between trainees and instructors is maintained at a dynamic level: the trainees are in constant need of example providers; goalie schools are responsive to such a need and the instructors are there to take care of these needs.

Of course, during on-ice programs, game situations are adopted. From handling the puck, one-timers, odd-man/even-man situations and pass-outs/walk-outs to deflections, breakaways, wrap-arounds and tight/mid/high zone plays, every aspect of a potential game situation is covered.

A goalie training agenda needs to include them all (many more than what we have listed here) in order to initiate the goaltenders on their way to becoming one of the most important players on the team and possibly the team's cohesive element: goalies are known as powerful stimulators during the games, especially in the cases where they render highly visible their physical and mental application – we know, a well prepared goalie can definitely affect the outcome of a game. Unfortunately, especially come play-off time, a poorly prepared goalie can also affect the outcome of the game.
 
For decades now, the importance of off-ice training has been known and utilized by all elite athletes. Again, what is sometimes over looked is the fact that mental training must be a major part of that off-ice training. Both are necessary for improving the physical and mental preparation during goalie training. Reputable goalie schools won't miss the point of giving their trainees the opportunity of an intense fitness program in order to maintain their bodies health which aids in supporting the effort during on-ice programs. Off-ice programs will strengthen every physical and mental muscle: goalie training will not turn trainees into genuine game leaders unless such efforts are made.

Warm-ups, power and weight training, quick feet, agility, coordination, game equilibrium, flexibility are some of the aspects covered in intense workout hours. On the other hand, top goalie schools opt for discussion classes because they are necessary for the mental formation of the trainees. This means that trainees are invited to participate in discussions over the importance of positive thinking during game competitions. Self-confidence is often outlined during such classes; it is the level from which the goaltender can act as a genuine fortitude generator for the rest of the team. Again, the goalies are unable to build and sustain the proper levels of self-esteem if they don't have the proper mental training in the first place.

Moreover, potential scenarios are also considered and rehearsed. Trainees are asked to mentally visualize various situations they may encounter. Such considerations are seen as necessary by comprehensive goalie training programs because such situations actually take place in real game circumstances, and it is sometimes amazing how just the act of visualization, when accurately performed prepares the goalie for these events. In the end, trainees are prepared at all levels to face the future games with the physical strength and mental determination characteristic to be authentic game leaders.
