MY Spanish dream

I've been living in Malaga province now for nearly 6 years, and I really love the Spanish way of life and the Spanish people. I've been living in Malaga province now for nearly 6 years, and I really love the Spanish way of life and the Spanish people.

My love for Spain and its culture began when I studied Spanish & Latin American studies in Portsmouth University, England. It was a 4 year course, and after that my dream was to live in Spain, and as I love the hot weather I chose to live in Andalusia.

In the year 1999-2000, I started working in Badajoz in Extremadura, which is the neighbouring province to Andalusia, and meanwhile, my Mum decided to move from the U.K to Spain. Obviously this was a huge step for her, not knowing the language, the legalities of buying a house, and having to deal with a different culture. It was all a new experience for her and for me. I finished working in Badajoz, and in 2001, my Mum moved to a beautiful house in a village called Totalan, situated 17km west of Malaga. I was in England at this point at a friends' wedding, and then in November 2001 I joined her in Totalan, and I was amazed by its beauty.

The village is small, with only approximately 630 inhabitants, but is surrounded by hills, and there's no noise, pollution or crime. It has a Town Hall, a small infant & junior school, a bank, a pharmacist's, a bakery, a church and two shops. The people are so friendly and helpful, and it's a real family community. It's the type of place where anyone would help you, and mother's exchange baby clothes between other mother's and generally everybody helps everybody else, which is so nice.

In late November 2001 I met the love of my life, and the Father of our little girl. I'm so happy here that I don't miss the U.K at all; it's just such a different way of living, somewhat more laidback, with warmer people, and a more "family" orientated way of thinking. I feel now totally integrated, speak Spanish fluently, and am completely familiar with the culture and customs.

I feel that if anyone has a dream or yearning to live in another country, one shouldn't be afraid, and should just go ahead and do it. I intend to live here for the rest of my life, and am so happy that my Spanish dream has been fulfilled. Viva España!
