Facial recognition systems were available as far back as the sixties and are extremely advanced today. A technology that once belonged only to the realm of science fiction, facial scanning and recognition has quickly become an integral part of security for information-sensitive entities, including government facilities to university research labs.

An ideal solution for many security problems encountered by large organizations and corporations, a good facial recognition system can make all the difference in securing a work environment. These systems are effective at ensuring only the people who are meant to enter a secure area can get in, making for a more organized, secure professional environment.

Increasingly effective, facial recognition systems provide a higher level of security than other forms of security, such as identity cards. However, both can be used together to create a tighter form of security. For example, if you lost your identity card or it was stolen, and someone tried to use it, they would be stopped by the facial recognition system.

Facial recognition systems are basically tamper proof; if someone did want to cause chaos or break into the system, it would be an involved, complicated process that would require loads of special knowledge. This is in opposition to an ID card, for example, as they can be forged much easier.

Though facial recognition systems ensure greater security, they can also come with a hefty price tag. Because manufacturing them is so expensive, that cost is passed to the consumer. Currently, the average business owner or individual is probably less likely to actually want a facial recognition system because they can't justify the expense.

But as technology progresses and biometric ID systems like facial recognition filter down to the masses, they become less expensive. This may prompt even the smallest companies or individuals concerned with security to implement such systems in their home or work space.
