High blood pressure is also called the silent killer because it has no symptoms but it slowly damages the veins and arteries and seriously increases the risks of heart diseases. 
 
The modern lifestyle and diet is the cause of high blood pressure at many people, because stress and worries together with salty fat foods, smoking and alcohol are factors that can cause the blood pressure to raise.

Once you've been diagnosed with high blood pressure it's important to keep a constant track of your blood pressure's values so that you can see how your condition is progressing and if the treatment that you chose is effective or not. Constantly checking your blood pressure is an important part of the treatment. You can check your blood pressure by going to the doctor and asking him to do it, but you have to do this a few times a day, so going to the doctor so often is impossible.

The best way to monitor your blood pressure is by using a home blood pressure monitor to do it. Home blood pressure monitors are not expensive and they can be found in a large variety of shops, available for anyone and without a medical prescription. Self-monitoring your blood pressure can give you and your doctor vital information about whether the lifestyle changes and diet restrictions that you have chosen are effective or not, and if any changes in the treatment need to be done.

There are several types of home blood pressure monitors available on the market and you can choose whichever you think that is best for your needs. The components of all blood pressure monitors are a cuff that is wrapped tightly around the arm, a gouge or a display depending if the monitor is digital or aneroid, and some of them also have a stethoscope attached so you can listen to the sound that the blood makes when it passes through the veins.

The most commonly used blood pressure monitors, and the most easy to use too, are the digital blood pressure monitors. They are as big as a walkman, or smaller, and they can be worn attached to the belt. They are connected to the cuff by some wires. The reading of the blood pressure is displayed on a screen and also recorded for further usage. Some of the digital blood pressure monitors can give a little printout of the last measurements.

The analog or aneroid blood pressure monitors can have a gouge that indicates the blood pressure, or a stethoscope that you use to listen to certain sounds and count them so you can calculate your blood pressure. They are much less expensive than the digital monitors but the digital ones are much easier to use since they always display the blood pressure on their screen.

Recently, wrist blood pressure monitors have been introduced to the market. They are a lot smaller than the ones that are used on the arm and very easy to use. The wrist blood pressure monitors can give accurate readings, but a recent study has proven that the traditional blood pressure monitors are more accurate then the wrist ones.
