You can make affiliate marketing a success if you can avoid some common mistakes that people make. I will also show you how to select affiliate programs that will continue to make you money month after month.

Affiliate marketing is popular with both vendors and promoters because vendors only pay a commission when a sale is made. The promoter does not have to worry about product fulfillment or customer service which is really beneficial for both parties.

Below are some mistake that are commonly made and how you can avoid them:

1. Creating a website that has too much information on it. Avoid putting a ton of banners and overwhelming the senses of people with a lot of flashy colors. People who are looking for answers to questions want to be able to access information quickly and you provide too much information they will look elsewhere to avoid information overload.

2. Avoid sending prospects directly to an affiliate link. If you have a website and your intentions are to sell affiliate programs the best way to build a pipeline is to set up an opt- in form. Once you get their name and email address you can continue to communicate with them and recommend other products.

3. Losing out on commissions because of affiliate commission theft is a problem. Unscrupulously, affiliates will take your commissions if they can get your affiliate url. You cannot completely avoid this but you can take steps to minimize it. Cloaking and redirecting your links are two of the ways you should consider to avoid commission theft.

In several studies it shows that it may take 5 to 8 contacts with somebody before they actually buy something. So it makes good sense to affiliate with a product that has residual income and recurring commissions.

When you are looking into a residual payment affiliate program you should consider if the product can retain their customers long term. A product like email auto responder is a good example because once somebody gets a list of prospects in an email series they are less likely to move services if they are satisfied.

In conclusion, you can avoid the mistakes that most affiliate marketers make by setting up an informative clean website, setting up an opt-in form to capture names and email address and avoiding affiliate commission theft. If you avoid these mistakes you will be way ahead of the game and you can make a substantial income as an affiliate marketer.
