A day's sailing South down to Barcelona city offers a contrast to the rugged countryside on the Costa Brava. This spectacular city has an amazing culture unlike the rest of Spain. It is a blend of old and new, like the historic buildings such as The Sagrada and the funky modern Ramblas de Mar and Park Güell.

A charter could include a passage South down to the Balearic Islands and a cruise of Palma de Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza or Isla de Formentera. Likewise one can sail north to France and explore the glamorous Cote d'Azur before returning to the Costa Brava and soft sand beaches like Calella de Palafruell.

Barcelona is the third most important trading port in the Mediterranean and a favourite stopover point for luxury cruise liners. The medieval shipyards bear witness to the splendour of maritime trade and the Catalan naval fleet of the middle Ages. When here going sailing is one of the 'must do activities' one can't afford to miss. The city's enviable position between the mountains and the sea ensures year-round outdoor fun. It is a place that is inconceivable until you get there, unbelievable while you walk its streets and unforgettable after one has left.

One can sail, windsurf, water ski, sea kayak, Jet Ski, motor boat, lounge on a yacht and feel the rush of wind in one's hair many ways. Jet skis or "moto aquaticas" and motor boats offer the thrill-seekers the high speed they crave and can be rented at most beaches. For those who wish to be off the sand but not speeding by, catamarans and other types of boats may also be rented.

Spain is famous for its boating and aquatic scene, so why not join in? From the beginning of August, a trip to Palma Mallorca to see the historical Copa Del Rye or King's Cup to see some of the world's best sailing is recommended.

Every year Spain has increased its number of ports and marinas along the coasts to attempt to meet the demand of travelers and locals flocking to the shores to enjoy the beautiful Mediterranean. Barcelona, a city with over two thousand years of history on the shores of the Mediterranean, provides the ideal setting for a discussion of issues related to the broad concept of life at sea. The Port of Barcelona welcomes a spectacular gathering of sailing ships and offer all sorts of activities related to maritime culture in its fold.
