If You're Getting Married, Marry Your Best Friend

By Roger Gurung

I'm probably one of the luckiest guys in the world. I have a beautiful wife, an equally beautiful daughter and I get to spend time with them everyday because I work from home. I even get my "me" time which, like the rest of us, we all desperately need.

Now I don't want to misconstrue this as a picture-perfect life because that is difficult to attain in this crazy world but we are happy and I wish this happiness on every one of you reading this, we all deserve it.

This story dates back to, of all nights, October 31st, 1997. It may have been Halloween in North America but I was in northern India at the time and in the middle of Diwali, the Hindu festival of the Lights.

And then I saw her.
From that very moment, I knew.

I was in a small Nepalese village perched 6,000 feet above sea level with the traditional sounds of Nepali songs behind me and a spirited battle cry from villagers in front. I embraced the very culture I shunned in my youth. Then, in the literal moment it takes to sip whiskey from a glass, my life changed.

She was dancing with her friends, completely unaware of anyone else's presence. Everything from what she was wearing – a traditional Indian suit – to how she moved, struck me. She looked absolutely beautiful.

Her hair was as long as a winter's night and her smile as bright as a summer's day. She was shy, slim and she was sexy and she did something to me that no one had done before.

She married me.

I am so proud to call her my wife and after almost 10 years I am still in love with her and I look forward to growing old together. In 20 years will I still feel the same way? Let's just say I'm not so naïve to think that life will forever be a bed of roses, but I embrace the idea of going on that journey with her.

It may not be perfect, and Lord knows, I'm certainly not and I don't think there is such a thing, but if you want my advice on how to have a happy, fulfilled, married life then make sure he or she is your best friend. If you're at a stage where you don't talk to your partner anymore it's still not too late to turn that clock back, so seek some help. But if you're about to tie the knot, I suggest you seriously ask yourself that question.

As for my wife Rinku, she is my life. My love. My everything. And from that very moment I saw her, I knew.
