By Charmaine Joy Caro

Catalogs – What Are They?
Catalogs are what most businesses use these days to complete their marketing plan. They are also known as booklets, manuals or booklets. They are commonly printed in full color to elicit high level of reader response. Most of the time, they are used in direct mail marketing to heighten your return on investment.

There are many benefits of using catalogs in business advertising. They are primary the tools usually used in securing orders from customers. No doubt there are an increasing number of companies who lean on catalog marketing to amplify their product sales. Well we could not blame these companies because catalogs offer great benefits that are achieved at a bargain price.

Advantages of Catalogs
Among the upsides of catalogs is the low operating costs. Imagine you can drive your marketing sales into sky-high while enjoying little expense in the catalog print production. This means making more money at a very economical cost.

Another positive aspect of catalogs is that they're not only designed for librarians as what most people know. They're being used nowadays as product manuals or pamphlets informing the customers about the latest services and products that a company is offering. The catalog is characterized as a smaller version of a publication that indicates a product for sale, a detailed description of the product, along with the price and the product.

The Printing Process
Printing the catalogs has come along way. Printing has been improved into a high-speed production process where any type of job can be produced in that instant. So many technologies were integrated in the production as the modern era comes close. Enormous changes can be seen like in the prepress systems, inks and paper. Truly we can say that printing has shifted from being an art to science.

To get the picture about the whole process of catalog printing, here are the printing methods that contributed much in the development of catalog marketing.

1. Letterpress Printing. Considered to be the oldest printing method, the letterpress printing is known for producing several copies of an image that are derived from frequent direct impression of inked and raised surface on rolls of paper. It is commonly utilized in printing labels as well as periodicals.

2. Gravure Printing. Referred to as a high quality technique in printing, gravure can create images that possess permanent tone impression akin to a photograph. This method makes use of a metal cylinder where the image is engraved. The process is used for printing catalogs, magazines as well as pressure-sensitive labels.

3. Offset Lithography. An offset printing process, the offset lithography is the method that is suitable for producing large quantities of printing jobs. Usually the products that are manufactured using this process are the catalogs, business forms, legal documents and newspaper.

4. Flexography. The printing process that is said to be the fastest of them all is the flexographic printing. It is better known as flexography. This printing process utilized rubber plates which contains a somewhat raised image. The plates revolve around a cylinder to move the image to a substrate. This process is used to print magazines, newspaper, business forms, catalogs, and many more.
