What is a Hysterectomy Procedure?

By James Kronefield

A complete hysterectomy is a type of surgery that will change your life forever. These surgeries are only recommended by your medical practitioner if you have a very serious problem that can be dangerous to your health. A complete hysterectomy is not something to be taken lightly. In fact, when you are first told you may even be in shock for a while. However, once you have had time to think about what is going on then you will want to begin asking your medical practitioner some important questions. The first thing that you may want to do is get a second opinion. Don't feel bad about this because it is a good idea and a good surgeon will even suggest it.

There are several reasons why a complete hysterectomy would be recommended. Sometimes a woman's life may depend on weather or not she has this type of surgery. An example of this would be cancer of the uterus. This is a life threaten situation because if the cancer is not removed it can spread to other vital organs. With a complete hysterectomy the uterus is removed, which will prevent the spread of the cancer. Another example in which this type of surgery may be recommended is for women that suffer from severe pelvic pain. This can cause a person to miss out on much of their life. This surgery can give them back all that they are missing.

There are still many other reasons for a woman to have a complete hysterectomy. Some of them include problems such as fibroids, endometriosis, excessive vaginal bleeding and uterine prolapse. There are other treatments that can be used for these problems, but it's when those treatments no longer work that a complete hysterectomy is suggested. If you are considering having a complete hysterectomy you should talk to your medical practitioner about what to expect after the surgery. There is a lot of important information that you have to know before having it done. You don't want to have surgery without knowing what to expect when it is over.

The more you know about having a complete hysterectomy, the better off you will be. This way you will not be hit with any surprises later on. For example, having a complete hysterectomy means not ever being able to have a baby. If you want to have children then you will have to look for an alternative to the surgery or find out if it is something that can be postponed for a few years. If the problem threatens your life then you will not have a choice, but if not you may be able to work something out. It never hurts to have someone that you can talk about your problem as well.
