How To Survive a Hurricane

By Barry Jamie

A little forethought and organization will payoff in a great memorable
adventure for that next outdoors excursion you may have planned.

The older liquid gas lanterns give off just as much light but you will have
to refill the tank with liquid gas and this can be messy as well as
dangerous if you are not careful. Both types of lanterns use mantels so be
sure to carry extras.

Pack a variety of clothing and prepare to dress in layers if you have to.
You will need to pack a hat of some sort to protect you from the sun or
rain. Some type of rain gear would be advisable. You will need to take a
close look at what type of activities you will be doing on your trip. Most
campsite have a fire pit with a steel grill to set the pots on. If there is a
campfire ban in place you can use a portable barbecue. Take the utensils
from the kitchen if you have bbq tools take them.

Severe weather can occur anytime of year and often with little warning.
According to NOAA, lightning is one of the most underrated severe
weather hazards because it usually claims one or two victims at a time and
does not cause mass destruction.

Cycling is an excellent and convenient way to explore the national park or
area where you are staying. Bringing along bicycles allows you to just get
up and go wherever you are. Most campers sleep in tents which are
usually made from a waterproof material like nylon. They can be erected
almost anywhere and can be carried in a small bag so that campers do not
have to use a vehicle.

More and more people are traveling these days for different reasons.
Some travel for adventure, some to be close to nature and some for just
a rejuvenating weekend getaway.

Are your kids begging you to take them camping, but you just can¡¯t find
the time to take them on a camping trip? Or would you like to introduce
your kids to the fun of camping for the first time, but aren¡¯t sure if they
will enjoy it, or might get scared? Either way, camping out in your
backyard will be a fun way to spend the evening and night with your kids.

How To Survive a Hurricane

Nature can wreak havoc to a community in the form of an earthquake, a
tornado, a wildfire or even a hurricane. There is nothing anyone can do to
stop this from happening.

The best thing to do is to prepare for the worst and get ready to
evacuate to higher ground if necessary. When a disturbance is first
detected on the radar screen, the weather forecaster will announce the
possible areas where the hurricane might hit. This can change in a matter
of hours so stay tuned to the news using your television or radio.

Those who are frequently hit by hurricanes annually usually know what to
do when a warning is issued. The people will stock up on emergency
supplies such as food and water as well as batteries for the flashlight and
the radio. If the power is likely to be knocked out, another thing to get is
a generator. This means buying enough gas to keep it running until
electricity has been restored.

Many campgrounds provide fun activities like pools, playgrounds, fishing or
recreational boating, so check your local listings to see what adventures lie
ahead.

Bring along your bicycles and hiking boots if you have them. Usually
equipment rentals will be available for activities you don¡¯t generally do.

Both sports demand having the proper equipment and knowledge for
safety reasons. Many National Parks offer established climbing routes that
will have a wide range of difficulty levels; usually no permits are needed,
unless an overnight stay in backcountry is involved. It is important to
check weather conditions beforehand and use caution, never climb alone.
On the other hand when you go camping, the clothes that you wear at
home will not be sufficient to shield you nor keep you comfy. It is a
known fact that nature does not always make things easy for the
venturers.

You will need a lid for the ice box take another box and fold the flaps
inside and slide the box over the top of you food box. Remember to keep
this ice box out of the sun and you will find the ice will last about 4 to 5
days.

The thought of camping alone can be very intimidating, especially if you¡¯re
a woman. Ideally, it is not something recommended to women new to
camping.

Be aware that the glass globe of all gas and propane lanterns get
extremely hot and can give you a serious burn. More on Camping
Outdoors. Some of the functions of these websites include being able to
search by state, campground, lake, or forest name. You can access maps
of each campground to see the layout of the grounds and how close
each site is to shower, bathrooms, playgrounds, beaches, etc... This
feature is great because you may choose which site you would like to
reserves and check for availability.

There are many websites that cater to campers with information on
where to find the most affordable camp gear as well as the most popular
items to buy and use when camping.

If the stores are closed, or if there is no food on the shelves, it is time to
improvise. The bathtub must be cleaned and filled with water so that the
people can simply boil it later on to have water to drink . Also fill up the
other containers in the house since it may take days before water will
come on again.

The hurricane may pack winds up to 100+miles per hour that can cause
cars, pieces of metal or wood to crash into the home. Damage can be
avoided by securing the house with permanent storm shutters or
boarding up the windows with five-eighth inch plywood that can easily be
installed then removed and stored in the home for future use. If it
becomes a category 4 or 5 hurricane, residents are advised to evacuate
the home. Some clothes, food and water must be packed immediately
making it possible to drive to safer ground.

The hurricane may pass within a few hours and it is only after it has gone
that a person can come out and assess how much damage it has left
behind. If no one is hurt, that is the best news; because a home can be
repaired but the loss of a loved one can never be replaced.

Make sure you have enough sleeping bags, pillows and extra clothes. Pack
the food you'll need, plus a little extra, and keep a supply of ice on hand
for perishables like meat and dairy.

Apart from being submerged in wilderness, an important component of
camping is the interaction with the localities, villagers and natives. These
native guides know the unexplored places, the less traveled paths, the
unknown facts, myths and stories about the locations.

Depending on where you will be staying you can also research the area
you will be visiting for information on bicycle rentals, kayak rentals and
lessons, and boating. There will be different outfitters available in the area
that may offer excursions and rentals through the park you are visiting.

Avoid camping in low places--Air flow gets stagnant and typically moisture
settles more. Also, if it rains whilst your tent is up, there's a greater
chance of water collecting when you're camped in a low lying area. Lastly,
position your tent so that your head is uphill wherever you camp (seeing
as most locations are rarely ever flat). The price is right. It is possible to
eat well when you¡¯re camping on a tight budget. Instant oatmeal, granola
bars, and pancake mix don¡¯t usually cost very much and fill you up.
Hamburger helper makes for a pretty nutritious, economic camping meal ¨C
you¡¯ll need to make sure you have all the ingredients. Substitute powder
milk for regular milk, and be sure to add enough water to make the milk
and the recipe.

With the hectic life many of us lead it would certainly be great to just
"get away" from civilization and have fun in the wild outdoors. How many
of us really know what to do when we get there or what to take with us
in the "survival pack"? Camping can be a really refreshing lift to life, but
roughing it may not come without some sort of price. Adequate
preparation is a must and may prevent your trip into the wilds from
becoming a disaster.

True to its name, the local quarries provided some of the highest quality
stone for monuments in Washington. Then we had enough space for
dressing or cooking. The bench-seat in back folds out into a comfortable
bed, so we were all set for camping.

Instead of going up to other campers and saying, ¡°Hi, I¡¯m Kerry and I¡¯m
here by myself¡± ask questions like ¡°How can I contact you if I experience
a problem¡± or ¡°is this campground regularly patrolled?¡±Don¡¯t advertise you
are by yourself by finding campsites away from walking trails
