Is China the New Superpower?

By Dal Hayer

As the world is continuing to grow and change, it is time to re-identify how the global community perceived nations and what are called world "superpowers." At the moment, there are two such superpowers in the world. These are the United States of America, and the former Soviet Republic. Both of these countries have a large population, a stable military and economy, and hold a considerable amount of power in the international community. These countries have held their position as superpowers for some time now, and the world has grown accustomed to both of these powers being in such a place in the world.

Nowadays, though, there is a possible emerging superpower in China. It has both positive and negative aspects that contribute to whether or not China should be considered the new superpower. At the moment, this nation should not be considered a superpower, although it has the potential to become so in the very near future. With about 1.3 billion citizens located in a vast territory of approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China has both the geographical size and manpower associated with the current superpowers of the world. In this facet, they are a shoe-in as the new superpower.

China also has the largest army in the world. The Peoples Liberation Army, as it is called, consists of 2.25 million people and is a formidable opponent compared to most of the armies that have been assembled in the world today. However, China's army is not as advanced as more Westernized armies, such as the one employed by the United States of America. Although China's military has more then enough manpower, it needs to be built up in order to be considered the new superpower.

In terms of China's position an influence power among other nations of the world, it has a strong advantage. Not only does China have a large influencing power over countries in the east, it is also a major player in decisions made throughout the world. China is one of the five permanent members of the United Nations and is heard in trials and tribulations that face almost any nation, much in the same way as the current superpowers. However, China has a strained relationship with many other nations, and these relationships will need to be strengthened if China is to be considered a new superpower.

While China has many things it needs to work on, there is no doubt that it is on its way to quickly becoming the next world superpower. It has a strong cultural factor that makes it unique and notable in the global community. It also is a major developer of new technology that reaches nations all over the world. While the term "superpower" should not be tacked on to China at the moment, it is probable that, if the country works on the problems it has right now, it will surely have the place as a superpower within in the near future.
