How to install a wall to wall carpet

By Jakob Jelling

The first step in installing wall to wall carpet is going to be getting rid of the old carpet first. This is pretty easy, but make sure that you remove all of the moldings and take the door out of the doorway first. After you do this, vacuum the carpet to get as much dust up as possible. This will keep the air in your home cleaner while you work. Then, cut the carpetting into strips and then roll it up. This is the easiest way to transport the old carpet as well.

You will also need to make sure that you get rid of the underlay as well. Carpet is not dust, dirt, or waterproof, so most of what has been getting into the carpet or spilled onto it will also drip down into the underlay. As a result, you're probably best to change this while you change your carpet as well. Additionally, if there are wear patterns on your carpet from the places where people walk the most, then those patterns will probably also appear on the underlay.

After you take up the underlay, you should clean your subfloor. You can also take the time to make sure that all of your floorboards are nailed down correctly. Then, you'll need to put down your new tackless strips - which are what will keep your underlay in place, and finally, put down the new underlay.

There will probably be seams between the pieces of new underlay. If this is the case, then you should seal these seams off with duct tape. Then, you'll need to start laying your carpet. Since you want to lay wall-to-wall carpet, you need to start with a piece of carpet that is a few inches larger than the space you want to cover with carpet - you should have about 5 inches of extra carpet. Then, you'll just need to push the extra carpet down between the underlay and the wall. This will make sure that your carpet does not come up at the walls, or get pulled into the middle of the room through wear and tear.

If you have to connect any smaller pieces of carpet, then you'll have to do the seam in the same way. Make sure that your carpet is going to overlap by a few inches where you have that seam, and put a piece of adhesive down to make sure that the carpet pieces will stay together.

Finally, make sure that you use a knee kicker and a carpet stretcher to stretch the carpet over the tackless strips. This will attach your carpet firmly to the floor, and you'll be done! Now all you have to do is replace your door and moldings.
