Television killed the radio stars

By Ken Wilson

Indeed, that's what happened. TV killed the radio stars. And who's to be blamed for that? The TV inventor, of course. The only problem is that the issue of "who invented television?" will probably never be answered to everyone's satisfaction. Every country likes to believe that they have their own television groundbreakers. The UK is very proud of Campbell Swinton and Baird, the pioneers who worked on the concept and the actual demonstration, respectively.

In our present-day civilization you cannot possibly be a functioning member of society without a close familiarity with TV programming. In most cases, people cannot stand to live without their TV set. Television is so universal and familiar that almost nobody is aware of the enormous progress made in less than a century. Considered a passing phase in the mid 1920s, television soon surpassed the radio in terms of audience preferences. Though led by the need for entertainment, the development of television was dependent on electronics. In the 20th century, television was a crucial technology and it continues to play an equally influential part in the 21st century as well.

If color broadcasting has been a major breakthrough back in the 1960s (more precisely in 1967 in the UK), the satellite transmissions and the launch of digital services in Europe in the 1990s turned television into a booming industry, creating a telly-based society in which video entertainment plays a huge role. The latest Social Trends surveys for the UK show that TV tops the list of leisure activities. The UK Office for National Statistics reported that around 85 percent of men and women watch TV every day.

Attention-grabbing theories embark upon the idea that the human brain is genetically predisposed to enjoy watching TV. Mixed audio and visual stimuli can be better processed by the human brain than either text or images alone. Providing speech in the context of spontaneous images, television becomes an effective communication medium. Moreover, when compared to radio or newspapers, TV it's a superior medium for advertising, due to its facility of splitting the message between speech and image, the flashing colors and the quick movements being irresistibly engaging.

Although eagerly competed by the Internet, television takes advantage of all new technological discoveries and the TV market is expected to accelerate its growth by end of this year. New trends in the development of the European digital television arise in this ever changing market, as the digital TV goes beyond pay-TV. Conversely, the advance pay-TV markets, including here the UK TV market, will have to cope with a slow growth, while free-to-air offerings will become crucial over the next five years.

The shift from analogue to digital and from modem to broadband access has changed the face of home entertainment. The future belongs to new products and services that capture demand for entertainment anytime and anywhere, such as personal content jukeboxes, portable game consoles, mobile entertainment, video-on-demand or high-definition TV. Not to mention iTV – Interactive television and user generated content (UGC) television. Web based TV channels – such as the UK-based YourKindaTV – are available online and through iTunes, or their shows can be downloaded to iPods and PSPs.
