Make Your Company Logo The Perfect Brand Ambassador

By Christine Macguire

One of the founding fathers of modern advertising and branding has said, "A product is something made in a factory; a brand is something that is bought by the customer." Customers want brands that are narrow in scope and distinguishable by a single word, the shorter the better. Branding is of high priority for companies of all sizes in today's hyper-competitive market. Even though the concept of branding exists and has been in practice since the 18th century, it still remains a hot topic in the business community. Many facets of the branding process are not well understood by most in the corporate world. A carefully managed and well-implemented brand identity program bears the image of an organization to be communicated to the world.

Branding is a demanding and complex process that requires disciplined attention over an extended period of time. Undoubtedly, the logo is a strategically important part of the branding program. The company logo is the most visible and recognizable element of the corporate brand identity. A logo is a primary symbol that identifies organizations throughout the world. The logo is considered the corporate equivalent of a unique signature belonging to one individual. It establishes an initial, prominent corporate presence on every communication piece. It is very important that a company logo creates a greater visual impact and ensures audience recognition.

Corporate branding starts with the logo. A recognizable look to a logo is the key to the success of a company's identity. A company logo should be deceptively simple and carry the company's vision along with it. A logo can mean all the things we want it to mean. A logo has to be created after meticulous research and input from many groups. The resultant logo should send the right message to the public.

Brand identity is the most valuable asset an organization or company can possess. A good company logo becomes the "face of the organization". Accurate implementation of the logo, one of the most important brand identity elements, will not only build equity in the brand but also strengthen and unify the messages in business circle. A simple but properly implemented graphic look can distinguish you from your competitors and make your company identifiable in the markets, the media and the financial community.

Companies relentlessly pursue the process of building the brand equity to gain a long-term competitive advantage. A good company logo design can prove to be the ideal solution to the brand building process. A good logo not only serves an interesting visual device for business cards, letterhead, envelopes and T-shirts, but it also portrays the integration and linear progression of a business. It should be lively and modern in appearance. As a stand-alone graphic symbol, the logo should rarely be altered and/or completely modified from its original design. Small variations in the use of the logo can undermine the impact of the brand.

Along with examples of correct usage of the typography, color palette, and other elements, specific directions should be included while a company logo is being developed. With a proper branding effort and a good company logo design, the company will definitely meet its goals and communicate with its customers. So design your logo in such a fashion that should look just as good in 15-foot letters on top of company headquarters as it does one sixteenth of an inch tall on company stationery.
