Building a Professional Web Site on a Budget

By John Murray

This is the initial in a many part round of articles about creating a professional looking web site inexpensively. The intended viewer for this assignment is people with any technical ability (or maybe you know someone with experience), and you want to begin some sort of internet manifestation with a minimal investment.

To make this essay simple I am going to go with an enterprise called godaddy.com for the domain registration and hosting. While this dissertation isn't supposed to be a exact endorsement of godaddy, I'm content with their offerings and using them allows me to put up some real dollar figures.

Selecting a domain name.
This may very well be the most time consuming some of beginning your web site. There are a couple of angles we should consider.

- Will you be trying to promote a brand?
- Are you trying to get noticed in the search engines?
- Are you trying to convey an idea?

Odds will you be are trying to do some of all three. Just bear in mind this, without visitors, your brand name and concept are pretty near pointless. Aspire to get a fair balance, but recognize to select a domain name with one or two keywords that you are trying to address in your SEO (search engine optimization). If you are unfamiliar with the concept of SEO, you can find piles of info and mis-information on the web about it. Some of my upcoming articles will further explain this, so depending on when you are perusing this you might want to try one of the web sites listed in the author resource box for extra information.

Is your domain name not already taken?
Ok, you're happy with your domain name choice, but is it untaken? Go to http://www.godaddy.com and do a domain name search. The majority of hosting companies have this ability and it will be easy to find on their home page. There is no charge for seeing if your domain name is not already taken. If it is, then it's time to purchase, if not, most services will offer you alternatives. Occasionally they get it right, but better part of the time you'd be better off to come up with another idea. Bear in mind, take your time on this one, it is a very important consideration.

Purchasing your domain name
Have a charge card? Then the majority of your work is done. Just follow the on screen directions, be sure to be careful filling out the information, I have heard stories of everyone who've had their domains invalidated due to invalid or incomplete (bad phone #, address or e-mail). For your e-mail address, make sure it's a reliable account that you're going to have for a long time. I virtually lost the first domain I registered being as how the renewal request was delivered to an e-mail account that Was no longer active.

What add ons are worth while??
During the process of purchasing your domain, godaddy will ask you "are there any extras you would like?" Or the internet alter ego anyway. They will overwhelm you with a myriad of options, all of which can be paid for later. Also, at this time the only one you should consider is internet hosting. I myself chose the deluxe hosting package (on linux) which was %5.59/month for a commitment of two years. It has given me more than enough space and respectable bandwidth. Along with that, it gave me access to MySQL databases, Java and PHP all of which were important to my design. Also, the http server is from apache, which I have some basic experience with and most online guides are geared towards.

Godaddy gives me the ability to set up multiple 10MB e-mail ids for my personal use. So, if you're wondering what you should add at this time, the hosting is it.

There you go, you've bought a domain and some hosting. You've taken the opening move to having an internet site. Your next step will be getting your site ready for conent...but that my peers is another report.
