Maui's Hot Spot: Kaanapali

By Caitlin Moore

Maui has meant paradise for millions of people; each time a plane touches down upon the runway, each time a lei is placed over an excited tourist's head, the reputation of this island is ensured for another few years. Visitors are impressed, magazines celebrate the best of Hawaii, and most importantly, the good vibes felt here are intensified with each smile and each astonished breath. Experiencing a bit of Maui is a must for any self-respecting traveler, so head this way soon if you've yet to have had the pleasure.

In particular, a bit worth focusing on is Kaanapali, located on the western coast and brimming with possibilities. This beach is one of the most well-known, and while sometimes compared to Oahu's Waikiki, Kaanapali Beach isn't as crowded. It is popular but not overrun, beautiful and unspoiled. Several hotels and a long concrete path make for easy access, but the snorkeling, white sands and spectacular sunsets will never let you forget that you're lucky enough to be far from the mainland.

Start things out by beginning at the beginning. That is, take a History and Legends Tour as you follow the Historical Trail. From taro farms to warriors in canoes, this area has seen lots of activity and retains a solid hold on its past. After learning about the ancestors and exciting scenes that these beaches and hills once saw, you might just appreciate the timeless beauty and ageless coastline a little bit more.

Now it's time to enjoy it all up close and personal. As long as it's a calm day, the water here is great for swimming and snorkeling. The sand is sugary and soft, perfect for spreading a towel and settling down for a good read or a mind-clearing zoning out session. The perpetual motion of the waves plus the cool breeze make up a moment you've doubtlessly been dreaming of as you complete the monotonous tasks and stressful responsibilities of everyday life. It all leads up to this height of relaxation while sitting in Kaanapali.

Since Maui isn't huge, taking a day trip to another part is something to consider. The Hana beaches, Kama'Ole Beach Park, Molokini Crater and Lahaina are all top-notch stops for adventurers, divers and shoppers. The island as a whole is what is considered to be the best of the best, so it's definitely worth exploring a little bit since you've come all the way here.

That being said, it might be hard to tear yourself away from the Kaanapali area once you've settled in and achieved that upper echelon of calm and tranquility. Beach lovers will be happy here, golf lovers will feel like they've traveled to heaven (a world class course, the North Course, is located right here) and shopping and fine dining options will meet the needs of those with a taste for the good life. Anything a world-weary traveler could want is right here, so staying put wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Choosing to stay in a Kaanapali Vacation Rental will make it even more likely that you won't stray too far, and this is a very good thing. We've all had experiences that entailed wanting to stay far away from our mediocre hotel room because it just didn't fit with the rest of your trip. This time, your accommodations will be the icing on the cake. Your lodging situation will be top notch if you take the time to go online in order to choose the beach house, condo or cabana that best suits your needs and catches your eye, so check out the options today. Maui, and especially Kaanapali are both waiting to show off what you've heard so much about.
