The Other One: Hollywood Beach, Florida

By Caitlin Moore

When you think Hollywood you probably envision celebrities in big sunglasses, palm trees basking in the West coast sunshine, and a glitzy and glamorous nightlife. This locale is certainly awe-inspiring in a flashy kind of way, but did you know that there's a place that shares the same name and has a decidedly more laid-back atmosphere? Hollywood Beach, Florida is bustling with activity and energy, yet it manages to be family-friendly and accessible at the same time. This beach town has a familiar name and sits near Fort Lauderdale and Miami but has established an identity all its own.

Two of the seven or so miles of beachfront that Hollywood has been blessed with consist of a wide, friendly and vibrant boardwalk. Only foot traffic is allowed along this pathway, and you're sure to see joggers, walkers, amblers and strollers galore. Soak up a quintessential boardwalk experience by buying an ice cream cone, catching a beach volleyball game, and watching the array of happy people go by. This will make for an excellent mood-setting activity, as there's much more fun to come.

The Anne Kolb Nature Center is just nearby, and will give normally landlocked tourists the chance to experience all the charms of the Intracoastal Waterways. Boat tours and guided nature hikes will allow the experts to pass along their knowledge of the wildlife and scenery, and an observation tower and picnic area will further immerse you and your companions in the unique eco-system. Interestingly, this park packs it all in by offering music, art and dance events as well. A visit here will keep you pretty busy, so save ample time in your itinerary to become acquainted with the untamed side of Hollywood Beach.

Speaking of wild, downtown is known for creating a party or two and upping the excitement factor in the Art and Design District. Visually engaging sights will greet you around every corner as you peruse the galleries and boutiques that have a wide variety of collectibles, antiques, fashions and accessories all in an inviting art-deco setting. Cafes and restaurants also line these brick streets, so when appetites switch from shopping to snacking you'll be all set. This district is all about satisfying travelers with a taste of something new so don't hesitate to indulge a bit – after all, you're on vacation.

Consistent with Florida's image as a recreation paradise, there are plenty of golf courses and tennis courts to visit. Lovely, persistently sunny weather along with easy access to attractive facilities mean visitors can play to their hearts' content. It's always nice to burn a few effortless calories while on vacation; endorphins, fresh air and an excuse to eat lots of delicious food make a good trip great.

Day trips to Miami or other nearby cities are easily doable, but sticking close to your home base, perhaps in a Hollywood Beach Vacation Rental, would certainly be a satisfactory way to spend a few days. You don't want to try and do too much, and with a comfortable place near the beach, one that's big enough for your group and contains amenities like a kitchen, a washer and a dryer, you'll feel cozy without being cramped.

Each day it'll be up to you – do what you want, when you want. Having a stellar place to hang your hat is the first step, and the rest will easily follow. Start planning your trip to Hollywood Beach today and get ready to enjoy the restful, relaxing getaway that you surely have been waiting for.
