Will there be Light at the End of Lincoln's Tunnel?

By Pamela Hewitt

Earlier, Ford announced that the latest Lincoln lineup will be bombarded with fresh and powerful product releases. Nonetheless, there are reports coming out that Ford has removed V8 references from the marketing campaign materials of Lincoln.

This week, Ford released new specifications to Lincoln dealers announcing that the much-awaited MKS sedan is going to be offered with V8 engine that can generate 315 horsepower. This announcement is in contrary to what has been reported in August. What was previously announced by the automaker was that MKS will get the 3.5-liter V6.

Now, that reports of scrapping the V8 is coming out, enthusiasts cannot help but think that the Lincoln MKS with the powerful V8 engine will no longer be offered by the automaker. It can be recalled that Automotive News suggested scrapping the V8 option to cut production costs.

Auto enthusiasts are now confused whether the MKS sedan will be using the V8 or the V6. There are also reports that if ever the V8 will be offered, said will be derived from the Yamaha powerplant. With the confusion around, enthusiasts are now clamoring for clarifications form the automaker.

Lincoln has significantly suffered from weak selling. This is because the brand has focused on semi-luxury barges such as the Town Car and the Zephyr. Town Car, a full-size luxury sedan, serves as the flagship of Ford's luxury car segment. Lincoln Town Car body parts were enhanced in 2003 to make way for a minor redesign. This year, Town Car trims were changed to Signature, Signature Limited, Designer, and Signature L. This year, Lincoln also introduced a new Zephyr to serve as its entry-level luxury car. It will be redesigned for the 2007 model year.

Things have changed. Now, Lincoln has new management that is empowered to produce the needed dose of fresh or innovative vehicles. The Navigator, for instance, underwent major redesign. For 2007 model year, Lincoln Navigator performance parts will be sporting large chromed grille and "power dome" hood. This is to put emphasis on its power and built.

Lincoln is trying to etch its name with all-wheel-drive. This is to retain its prominent European standing in the luxury car segment. Critics spotted several shortcomings of the new Lincoln models nonetheless; there are signs that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
