A Folly Beach Vacation is No Mistake

By Caitlin Moore

If your schedule, work demands and family responsibilities have lately been pushing you to the limit, then why not push back? Take a little trip to a place known as the "Edge of America" and show everyone that you're perfectly capable of hanging on tight in the face of challenges and letting loose when you know it's time. Folly Beach, South Carolina will take you just far enough away from it all to relax and unwind, so consider making your way to this charming destination when you're ready to see things from a different vantage point altogether.

Folly Beach has a funny name for being such a safe bet. It's actually a barrier island that stretches for about seven miles, and is located a cozy eight miles away from colorful Charleston. The sand, sun and fun all constitute the makings of a good time, and combined with the rustic charm and fabled southern hospitality of this region of the country, it's a no-fail recipe for vacation success.

A popular surfing spot, the Washout, offers excellent waves for those inclined to test their boarding skills. You'll easily notice the Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier because it extends prominently into the ocean and gathers together the fun and frivolity that piers are known for. Most visitors to Folly Beach County Park have the idea of frolicking down to an art, as this place makes it easy to lose yourself and become a kid again. From the umbrella rentals to the picnic areas, you and your loved ones will be all set to enjoy a properly laughter-filled day on the beach.

Folly Beach is a safe haven for loggerhead sea turtles, and coming out to watch them nest and go about their daily and nightly business is a major attraction. The community is serious about protecting and encouraging the safety of these delicate endangered species, so be sure to follow all guidelines when it comes to observing and existing alongside these creatures of the sea.

Several restaurants are available for satisfying and even defying expectations about what makes a good meal. Seafood is plentiful, as you would imagine, but everyone should find something to love – and eat. The night can continue for as long as you want as you meander down the road and choose from various happenin' patios to watch the sunset or the people. End it all with a stroll on the beach, romance-novel style, and tell that special someone just how you feel.

Art galleries, local creators and a phenomenon known as the Bluegrass Jam will prove the creative depth of Folly Beach's residents, so don't neglect your cultural side as make your way around town. Dancers are also welcomed to cut a rug with members of the Islanders Shag Club. For the uninitiated, the shag is South Carolina's state dance and it is alive and well; lessons are offered once a week and most other nights are a free-for-all of shagginess.

The last thing that must be mentioned is the Morris Island Lighthouse. Erosion of the beach has caused this towering landmark to become surrounded by water, but the actions of concerned citizens have allowed it to be protected from further wear and tear thanks to an underground steel wall. Enjoy this unique sight and the spirit of the caring community that is reflected upon it.

Now that you see a trip to Folly Beach wouldn't be a blunder, it's time to think about accommodations. The best complement to a laid-back beach trip is a unique property that will encourage peace of mind to flourish for you and all your companions; a place that will meet everyone's needs while offering convenience as well. Look into finding a Folly Beach Vacation Rental that strikes your fancy – it won't be too hard.

Your trip to the edge will be an exciting one, and the stories you come back with are likely to inspire a few others travelers to stray from the mainstream and check out life as it's viewed from the brink of normalcy.
