The Colonnade Inn, Sea Isle City. A Home Away from Home

By Leslie Gowen

Ask anyone who works from nine to five, Monday through Friday, then spends the weekend doing laundry and housecleaning, what it is he or she dreams of doing that is out of the ordinary. Without batting an eye, I'd bet a week's pay that his or her response would be "To be able to take a couple of days away from work so I can spend some quality time with my family."

What stops people from having that long desired holiday anyway? Based on my own practical experience, two things would — money, because most holidays require a lot of it, and time, because most of the attractive vacation spots are located far away from home.

Not so if you live anywhere near to or just a few minutes away from Sea Isle City, New Jersey. The reason: the invitingly cozy Colonnade Inn and its wonderful vacation offer.

A grand house built in 1883 as a summer hotel, the Colonnade Inn in the lovely and popular seaside resort of Sea Isle City, New Jersey, used to be just one of many hotels that provided shelter and a deliciously warm and hearty breakfast to the throngs of holiday-seekers from Philadelphia who are eager to get away from the heat of summer in the city.

Built in classic Victorian-style architecture, the Colonnade Inn, which was restored and re-decorated in 1991 by its then owner Dr. Carolyn Crawford, now stands as the lone survivor of that era. Nevertheless, it has withstood the test of time and has survived many storms brought on by both nature and the wrecking ball of progress. Originally bought by the Dorsem family in 1943, the Colonnade Inn was run by them until the time it was sold to Dr. Carolyn Crawford in 1992 and then to the Colonnade Investment Group in 2004. Today, the illustrious hotel offers a glimpse not just to the Sea Isle City's past but also to those of the other shore towns on the Jersey coast.

Combining the charm of the past with the comforts of the present, the Colonnade Inn offers the following distinct modern features even as it maintains its Victorian era milieu:

• Central air conditioning
• Whirlpool tubs or Jacuzzis in each room
• Gas-flamed fireplaces in each room
• Comfortable furniture
• Hearty breakfasts
• Cable television in the rooms and in the parlor
• A wrap-around porch that offers a scenic view of the ocean
• Side garden with fountain and hot and cold outdoor showers

Presently, this cozy Victorian-style hotel has 18 units available that guests can rent out from two nights and up at a very reasonable price. Visitors also have a choice of renting one of the unique rooms or a two- or three-bedroom condominium.

Studio units all boast of a gas-flamed fireplace and a Jacuzzi tub along with a kitchenette with stove, sink and refrigerator. The bigger units may have two or three bedrooms, a full kitchen and a living room area.

Executive suites that can sleep four to six guests are also available and these come with fully equipped kitchens, private bath, a living room area and cable TV. The rates for executive suites include a full breakfast and daily housekeeping service.

The gas-flamed fireplaces of each room make the Colonnade Inn a perfect setting for an intimate evening alone with a special someone.

The wrap-around porch with comfortable wicker furniture is open to all guests who may want to spend a quiet evening gazing at the scenic view of the ocean.

The great thing about the Colonnade Inn is that its magnificent amenities and wonderfully distinct offers are available to anyone interested to avail of these at any time of the year because the hotel is open the whole year round.

When you want to take a break from the hassles of your job and the rigors of city life, come to the Colonnade Inn. Relax and enjoy the homey feeling. Bask in the luxury of the world-class modern amenities and enjoy all these knowing they are all reasonably priced.

This alone makes the Colonnade Inn the ideal getaway place we only used to dream about.
