Internet dating is not like this at all. You can find out more about your date before actually meeting. And it is not a general rule anymore that the person putting a personal ad on the internet is ugly, desperate or psycho.
Internet dating is quite safe, as none of your specific personal contact details will be handed out unless you decide to give it out. You can remain anonymous until you decide to provide more details. Should the person you are talking to turn out to be somehow different then advertised or weird, you can just drop him or her. If they don't let you go, then you have the option of reporting them to the webmaster of that dating site. It is a safe thing to do, don't worry! They don't know anything about you, so they cannot find you!
The most important thing about internet dating is that it is a free way to date. Most of the dating sites allow free membership, so you will waste no money on drinks in order to get to the conclusion that you have nothing in common with your date!
