Firan, Money, and Improving Myself

By Robert Ladouceur

How text based roleplay helped me raise my money acumen!

As you read this, your first question might be, what is text based roleplaying, and what does the word "acumen" mean? I found myself looking up the meaning to ensure that I understood the context first. Text based roleplaying is a very entertaining way of roleplaying where you actually type everything that is going on. From your character's looks and clothing, to the objects that they have in their possession, to their actions, everything is typed, leaving much open to your imagination, and that of others as well. As for Acumen, the word is defined as one's shrewdness, or keen insight into something.

Having been roleplaying for a long time, I have had the pleasure of seeing various economical systems, and one that comes to mind that has actually helped me become more perceptive when it comes to money, is the system on Firan. Firan is an original themed text based roleplaying game, or MUX as we call it. Firan's economical system is so well thought out and coded, that it takes into consideration the supply and demand of products, and the amount of money in the game at one time, making products worth more or less in the global market. There are crafters, merchants, thieves, panhandlers, and all sorts of other professions that use the economic system daily. It's amazing to see how everything works so well together, bringing the reality of money into a game environment. Who would have thought that I could learn to be more frugal with my bank account, because of a game?

Because of the system on Firan, I personally find myself being much more astute when it comes to money, trying to ensure that I'm watching my pocket book. Primarily because, much like on Firan and other text based games, you never know when surprise expenses will come up. Not only that, but Firan's system is so unique and well done, that when selling things that I have on online auction sites, I find myself really watching to see what others are selling their products for, and how many are for sale, since that can greatly affect how much I might get for my products.

Overall, text based gaming has helped improve how discerning I am when it comes to the mighty dollar, because it's made economics interesting, because it's made me watch the auction sites more carefully as I sell my items, and it has also made me realize that not only is nothing in life free, but that it's not free within the online gaming community either!
