Mazda Tribute, a More Car-Like SUV

By Margaret Adams

Mazda unveiled the evolutionary changes incorporated in the latest version of Tribute. The prototype of said model reflected significant changes in its style, appearance, materials and performance. Said changes are designed to give the vehicle a more car-like appearance and to eventually deviate from the past stigma of SUVs. All-new Tribute will debut at the Chicago Auto Show in February.

Striking changes in Mazda Tribute parts include the new body surfaces, front clip and grille opening which is a variation of the 2006 model. The latest addition to Mazda's new lineup was also given fresh fascia, which features rectangular running lights that extends to the front fenders. Headlight frames were made sharper, wheel arches rounder and rear hatch window more rectangular. The sides were also revised with smoother and cleaner lines similar to that of Ford Escape. Moreover, the pool of Mazda engineers and designers have upgraded the material and used better features on its interior.

Mazda Tribute debuted in the year 2000. Before, it was packaged as a rugged and athletic vehicle with a 200-horsepower V6 engine. It was an epitome an agile and high-performing sport utility vehicle with functional suspension. Unfortunately, the automaker has decided to put a halt to its production.

The bright side of it is that Tribute will be making a much-awaited come back in the year 2008. The latest version is expected to put variation on Mazda architecture which is reflected in Ford Focus, Volvo S40 and V50. The latest architecture of the automaker will also be reflected in the upcoming vehicle lineup which include compact luxury from Volvo – XC50 crossover, Mercury Mariner and Ford Escape.

According to Ford, there will be no layoffs at the Claycomo plant in Kansas. This is planned to compensate for the halt of Tribute. There are about 40,677 Tributes produced in said plant for the year 2005. Mercury Mariner's production was also transferred to Claycomo plant last fall.
