Money-Saving Home Remedies

By Chris Chenoweth

There are hundreds of homemade remedies that can save you a lot of money and perform just as effectively as expensive over-the-counter products. Most of these remedies require ingredients that you already have in your kitchen or bathroom. Listed below are just a few of these remedies.

ACHY MUSCLES:

+To soothe achy muscles from the flu, mix 1 tablespoon of horseradish into ½ cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as massage oil for instant relief.

ARTHRITIS:

+Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

BEE STING:

+Make a paste of water and baking soda and rub it onto a bee sting. Leave it there for 5 minutes, then rinse. The baking soda neutralizes the venom and draws the toxins out of the skin as it dries.

+Apply a raw onion slice directly to the sting. The detoxifying sulfur in the bulb neutralizes the venom, reducing inflammation immediately.

+Spray WD-40 and rub it into the sting.

BLISTER:

+To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine. It is a powerful antiseptic.

BOIL:

+Cure a boil by covering with Hunt's tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.

BRUISE:

+Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to a bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.

BURN:

+Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.

+ Burn your tongue? Put sugar on it!

CHIGGER BITE:

+Rub Preparation H on bite.

CUT:

Paper cut : use crazy glue or chap stick (glue is used instead of sutures at most hospitals).

CARPAL TUNNEL:

Squeeze your hand into a fist; hold for 10 seconds, relax. Repeat 15 times.

HEADACHE:

+Peppermint oil is a terrific cure for tension or migraine headaches. Dilute 10 drops into 4 tablespoons of olive oil and massage it across your forehead and temples.

+Drinking 2 glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional pain relievers.

+Instant headache relief: Place palms together and press firmly in the hollows of eyes with index fingers; hold 30 seconds.

PIMPLE:

+Cover a pimple with a dab of honey and place a band-aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.

+Cover pimple with Colgate toothpaste (not the gel kind) and leave on overnight.

SORE THROAT:

+To ease a sore throat, mix ¼ cup of vinegar with ¼ cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon 6 times a day.

SPLINTER:

+To remove a splinter, just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.

STUFFED UP NOSE:

+Chew on a couple of strong Altoids peppermints.

SUNBURN:

+Smear extra virgin olive oil on your sunburn. It could dramatically reduce your risk of skin cancer.

+Fill your bathtub with tepid water and add 1 cup of white vinegar. Soak for at least 15 minutes. Vinegar helps take the sting and swelling out of burns OR empty a large jar of Nestea into your bath water and soak for at least 15 minutes.

TOENAIL FUNGUS:

+Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

+Another method, rub Vicks on and around the affected nail. Cover with a sock and leave on overnight. Do this every night until fungus disappears.

URINARY TRACT INFECTION:

+Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Dissolve 2 tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly.

WARTS:

+Cover the wart with a piece of duct tape for six days. Remove the tape, soak the area in warm water for 10 minutes and rub wart gently with a pumice stone. Leave the wart uncovered overnight, then cover again in the morning to start the next six-day cycle.
