Money-Saving Household Tips #2

By Chris Chenoweth

There are hundreds of great household tips that will save you money. The best part is, most of these tips require ingredients that you already have lying around your house. Listed below are just a few of these tips:

Use cold cream, peanut butter or salad oil to remove cement glue from furniture.

Rubbing cold tea on varnished floors makes a good cleaning agent.

Floor squeaks can be silenced by dusting talcum powder or dripping glue into the cracks.

Sticky dresser drawers will slide more easily if you rub candle wax or soap on the runner.

If you have a leaking vase, try coating the inside with a thick layer of paraffin.

Wipe off mildew on shower curtains with baking soda paste and lemon juice. Use equal parts vinegar and water for shower doors.

Reuse first, then recycle. Use the other side of old junk mail for scrap paper before taking it to the recycling bin.

If your appliance is not working, try calling the manufacturer if they have a toll free number. Have the model number ready and explain the problem. Sometimes they will be able to tell you how to fix it over the phone, saving you the cost of a repair visit.

When you get your mail, keep your old envelopes and write down your shopping list on the outside of it. Inside the envelope, store the coupons that correspond to the list when you go to the store.

Save the water you use to wash your vegetables to water your houseplants.

Reuse wrapping paper, ribbons and bows.

Save your paper and reuse it for scrap paper such as writing messages or grocery lists or even to collect grease in the kitchen.

Keep a toothbrush around the kitchen sink - you will find it useful in cleaning rotary beaters, graters, choppers and similar kitchen utensils.

To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

To keep your earrings organized place them in stackable ice cube trays. The trays are easy to clean and fit neatly in a dresser drawer.

When your hands are badly stained from gardening, add a teaspoon of sugar to the soapy lather you wash them in.

Before emptying the bay of your vacuum cleaner, sprinkle water on the newspaper into which it is emptied, and there will be no scattering of dust.

To remove burned-on starch from your iron, sprinkle salt on a sheet of waxed paper and slide iron back and forth several times. Then polish it with silver polish until roughness or stain is removed.

Dip a new broom in hot salt water before using. This toughens the bristles and makes it last longer.

Spray garbage sacks with ammonia to prevent dogs from tearing the bags before being picked up.

You can clean darkened aluminum pans easily by boiling them with two teaspoons of cream of tartar mixed in a quart of water. Ten minutes will do it.

Fresh lemon juice will take onion scent from hands.

If pictures on your wall will not stay straight, put corn pads on the two lower back corners of the frame. The pads will prevent the frame from moving.

Junior wet the bed? Blot, then spread baking soda over the stain and let it soak up the moisture. When dry, brush off the baking soda.

Remove candle wax from carpet by putting paper towels over the spot and pressing with a warm iron. Repeat until it lifts off.

Melt away crayon marks. Just aim a blow dryer at the marks for two minutes or until the wax starts to melt. Wipe clean with paper towels.

Apply hand lotion to kids' hands before they paint. Paint will wash off easier.

The next time you remove that full vacuum-cleaner bag, spritz a sheet of newspaper with water. Place your vacuum on the paper and remove the bag. The wet sheet captures the flying dust.

Keep bugs away from garbage cans outside by sprinkling powdered dishwasher detergent on the bottom of each one. The scent repels flies.

If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you do not have insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.

Marigolds will prevent rodents.

Discourage grass from growing between bricks or on a patio by sprinkling salt in the crevices.

Dawn dishwashing liquid kills fleas instantly. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations.

To keep cat litter fresh smelling, mix baby powder and/or baking soda in with the litter.
