Root, I am your sub domain

By Werner de Bruin

Being quite a Star Wars geek myself, I find myself thinking how different it would have been if we had watched Episodes 1-3 before the original episodes (4 - 6). My thoughts pass through every part of the 6 episode trilogy, thinking of every peak in the movie. I think of my own personal favourite; the scene with Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker in "The Empire Strikes back" and I remember the jerk that jumped up in the movie and announced "He is Luke's father".

"Was that such a life changing experience?" I decided to run my own little test. I accomplished the impossible by convincing my girlfriend to watch the Episode One with me. To my surprise, she actually liked it... and so we watched the next and the next episode...

So let's go back, what if we had watched the first 3 episodes? Would the jerk have found another way to ruin the movie? Would I have saved on expensive psychiatry bills?

Well, today I would like be on the other side and I want to be the jerk that jumps up and ruins the surprise that many website owners still don't know about....

"Root, I am your sub domain..."

Contrary to popular belief; the www is actually a sub domain for your root domain.

Do a test - type in your website www.domain.com, and remove the www. What happens? Well, there could be one of 3 things that happen.

Example No. 1
Symptom No.1: Blank or Error page comes up Condition No. 1: This is mainly due to the "Lame-ass syndrome". Failure to resolve the problem, may cause severe loss of traffic and even link value. If there are 100,000 people typing your URL each month, and only 1% of them forget to add the www - that means that at least 1,000 people will not find your site. Speculation - maybe? But I wouldn't want to take that risk...

Cure No. 1: "Lame-ass syndrome" is easily cured by simple tweaks made to your zone-file˛. Here's an example of how you would go about fixing the problem. =============================================
domain.com. IN, NS, ns2.servername.com.
domain.com. IN, NS, ns.servername.com.
domain.com. IN, A, Webserver_IP_Address
www IN, CNAME, domain.com
=============================================
1. Create a "www" sub domain
2. Point it to your original domain CNAME
3. You could just point it to the server name (or IP), but it's simpler to only have to change your main CNAME's IP when you move from one server to another.

Example No. 2
Symptom No. 2: Mirror website comes up Condition No. 2: Catoptrophobia - If you don't know it's a mirror then it can't hurt you. But yet it does. We intelligent people do know that it's the same domain name as www.domain.com, but unfortunately the people from Google have missed out on that lecture - thus instant duplication.
Cure No. 2: We suggest avoiding the mirror completely and destroying any evidence of it. Again, a simple inclusion of the following text into your .htaccess file will instantly sort out the problem: ============================================
RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.domain.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.+)$ http://www.domain.com$1 [L,R=301] =============================================

Ok, so now the smart-ass Search Engine Optimiser's out there are probably screaming "Yahtzee" by now, but wait... there's more. Why settle for average when you can go with super-fast (and not to mention the short-cut method)? Set up a vhost file in your root directory and tweak the above code to look something like this: =============================================

ServerName domain.com
ServerAlias www.domain.com
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.domain.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ http://www.domain.com$1 [L,R=301]

=============================================

Example No. 3
Symptom No. 3: Redirects to www.domain.com Condition No. 3: Being a 'know it all' isn't as bad as it sounds. We read the book, and knew that Darth Vader was Luke's father.
Cure No. 3: There's only one piece of the puzzle that's still missing. Sit back and relax, have a cold one, and enjoy the knowledge that you have one less barrier to worry about. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lame-Ass Syndrome (LAS): This unfortunate yet common syndrome results in sites that will not function without the WWW in the URL; it is caused by System Administrators presenting signs of severe DNS laziness.

Zone-file: In computer networking, a zone file is a database element of the domain name system (DNS) used by BIND and other DNS server software. A zone file typically contains information that defines mappings between domain names and IP addresses and can also contain reverse mappings which can resolve IP addresses into domain
