1-800 Call Mom-and-Dad

By Katherine Hansen

There is no reason for college students not to call home to their families as often as they want and need to. Beginning a new life away from home is, at times, overwhelming. There are new classes to take, new goals to achieve, new relationships to be made and new places to be explored. However, while students are experiencing these changes, it is important to still be able to keep in touch with friends and family. Unfortunately, many factors contribute to this lack of phone calls home. Students may not have money, college dorms charge incredibly high long-distance rates and even if there are affordable rates, there is always the question of which roommates and friends are using the phone.

With this in mind, these expensive and inconvenient obstacles do not have to keep students away from their families. For years now, businesses have employed familiar 1-800, toll-free numbers which allow customers to contact them regardless of where the customers are calling from or the time of day. With 1-800 numbers, the party being called pays for the calling charges and not the person actually making the call. This situation is ideal for businesses, but can also be extremely useful for individuals who wish to keep in touch with their families anytime and from anywhere. With a 1-800 number that is assigned to a family's landline, there are no longer any worries about being able to reach home at a moments notice.
Anyone who has the number will be able to use it and the college students in the family can benefit most from this service. They can be on the road, in their dorms or even at their part-time job and yet still be able to call home without hassles and financial stress. Consider the following advantages of using a 1-800 number while away at school:

Problem - Students cannot afford calls
Solution - Family pays for all those incoming calls made using the 1-800 number

Problem - Dorm phones charge too much for long-distance
Solution - Rates for 1-800 calls are close to the lowest domestic, long-distance rates available

Problem - Student shares room or dorm with others who might use the phone
Solution - A student's 1-800 number can only be used to call the student's family

Problem - Student has poor cellular service signal in their dorm leading to lack of service or the need to move around to find signal.
Solution - 1-800 numbers use landlines that do not have signal or connection issues

Problem - Cellular phone cost money regardless of usage
Solution - Calls made using 1-800 numbers are based on per-usage rates, not monthly fees or long-term contracts

Problem - Cellular habits can lead to unhealthy usage habits such as calling at odd hours and for too much time
Solution - The 1-800 number focuses on family and avoids the pitfalls and downsides of cellular service plans

Most long-distance providers now offer this service at very reasonable rates and it can be a solution that college students and their families never considered before, but is actually ideal for the college years. With the cost and flexibility that they allow, 1-800 numbers used by individuals and families for non-business calling will continue to increase and become a standard way in which families and their student children keep in touch.
