Michigan, with its inclusion of three Great Lakes (Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior) offers fishermen something special in the way of choices. Whether you prefer to fish on one of these big lakes, one of the state's many smaller bodies of water, or even on the rivers and streams that feed the Great Lakes, you'll be sure to find a place that suits your angling needs. Michigan offers angling for many different species of fish, from salmon to trout to bass, but some might say that it's the Michigan walleye angling that's the best.
The Michigan Walleye Tour is a great place to start (or maybe end) your Michigan walleye angling trip. This tour, sponsored by the Saginaw Bay Walleye Club, is a competition where fishermen can enter this tournament and judge their fish against the others caught in the tournament area. If you're not feeling up to a angling competition just yet, don't worry. There's plenty of other ways to enjoy Michigan walleye angling, either on your own or with a guide.
Walleye in this state spawn in the spring, and they tend to like to live in rocky and sandy bottomed lakes of medium depth. Carnivorous, these fish will pretty much eat anything that is put in front of them, whether it's another small fish, an insect, worm or fish bait. Sometimes, these fish can be a bit skittish, so it's recommended that you fish for walleye between sundown and midnight, under cover of darkness. The walleye is considered worth any trouble it takes to catch, as its white, mild flesh is highly prized for culinary purposes.
Michigan's Department of Natural Resources has a website which issues status reports on the numbers and types of fish caught in a specific week, and this can be a great resource for Michigan walleye angling. By checking this site, you can see which areas of the state have the most walleye being caught, as well as which times of year are best to catch this fish. Additionally, while you're at the Michigan website, be sure to take note of the angling license requirements. Anyone (resident or non-resident) who wishes to fish in the state of Michigan must have a angling license, which can be obtained on a 24 hour or yearly basis.
Michigan walleye angling is some of the most satisfying angling available in the state, because you can keep your catch and even cook it up for a delicious dinner. Fish for walleye during the spring and summer, and you'll have a great angling vacation.
