Tourist's Comforts - Hotels

By Anil Gupta

Whether one comes to Barcelona as a tourist, for business reasons or in order to attend a Spanish course, there are many different ways to stay in Barcelona. For every taste there is a right type of accommodation. No matter if one wants to bring his/her home to Barcelona as one does not want to miss the possibility of making his/her own dinners or having a bit more space to one's own, then there is choice of booking self-catering apartments in Barcelona. Centrally located and fully furbished including towels and bed linens. Or one can even book a room in one of the many hotels at one's disposal and enjoy all the service offered by a hotel. If one wants to meet the true Barcelonian stay in one of the family housings or for studies abroad one might like to book into one of the shared flats and live with other students from all over the world. In short, there are many possibilities of making one's stay in Barcelona the most enjoyable.

Where one stays will depend on how much one wants to pay and which district one wants to stay in. There's something for everyone, from youth hostels to luxury five-star hotels.

Cheap youth hostels, with dormitory accommodation, cater for young travelers in the old town. One can try the Kabul in the Plaça Reial or the Palau. Many of Barcelona's pensions offer a bit more privacy than its hostels at a similar price and are located in the old town. The old-fashioned three-star Hotel Suizo is suitably located for visiting the Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter), as is the Hotel Gótico, just by Plaça Sant Jaume.

The four-star Hotel Colón offers a view of the cathedral. For lodging on the famous Ramblas, the attractive Hotel Rivoli Ramblas or the Regina can be tried. For somewhere cheaper, but in the same league, it's worth booking a room in advance at Hotel Husa International.

The comfortable hotels in and around Plaça Espanya are perfect for business travelers. The four-star Melià Confort Apolo, on Avenida del Paralelo, Barcelona Plaza, opposite Palau Nacional (National Palace) and Expo Hotel, are three of the modern hotels close to the business district and trade fair complex. If one takes a stroll from Expo Hotel to Plaça d'Espanya along Avenida de Tarragona, one will see Miró's sculpture, Dona i ocell (Woman with Bird), on the left-hand followed by Arenas de Barcelona bullring, which is no longer used.

There's no shortage of luxury accommodation to choose from. From Hotel Princesa Sofía, which boasts a restaurant with panoramic views, to Rey Juan Carlos I, at the end of Diagonal, or the Ritz, on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes?

Arts Barcelona offers panoramic views across the city to the Mediterranean. Rey Juan Carlos I is a hotel set among peaceful private gardens overlooking the city. The Hilton Barcelona offers the luxury and comfort one would expect in the heart of the commercial and business district. One can even try the impressive Art Nouveau Le Meridien, on the Rambla dels Estudis, for something special without the five-star price tag. The options are all there for any person to have a leisurely stay.
