Weight and balance of your tennis racquet.

By Michael Cook

Weight and balance are important components of your tennis racquet. They can affect your speed, power, maneuverability, and many other things that can change your game. Weight is a simple balance between maneuverability and power while balance must be tuned in to your style for maximum control.

The old wooden racquets weight used to be between 13 and 14 ounces. With technology, it became possible to make racquets lighter than 8 ounces; even are even lighter than 7 ounces. In a general sense, a lighter racquet is more maneuverable and easy to swing than a heavier racquet, but heavier racquets are more powerful.

Balance is the distribution of weight across the racquet. The balance of your tennis racquet can dramatically affect how you play. Swing Weight is a term referring to how much weight must be moved through the air each time you swing your racquet. By moving the balance towards the head of the racquet you will increase the swing weight. A racquet that is Swing Heavy has more power, but is much slower. When balanced correctly, light racquets that are head heavy can have as much power as the heavier racquet that is head light.

You will feel that it is easier to play with the lighter head heavy racquet when playing a slower game, but there is a problem when the tennis ball starts moving faster. The inertia of a light frame that is head heavy is lower than a heavier head light racquet. During the impact with the ball, the mass of the heavier handle helps support the position of the whole frame.

With a light handle, the stress of impact is on the racquet grip which is distributed to your wrist, elbow and shoulder, causing loss of control or injury. Again, you do not feel it when playing the slower game, but only when the ball comes faster.

Lighter and head heavy racquets are better for the slower game because they deliver more power. Heavier even balanced or headlight racquets are better for advanced or stronger players have a faster game to have more control and avoid injuries. Tour professionals use custom balanced and usually heavier frames. Any frame could be made heavier and balanced the way you like using lead tape, but don't forget to read up about stiffness and flexibility.
