Is the 9-5 ruining your love life? A viable alternative
By Bubbles Monte
Working from home and earning a good living doing so is a viable option. There are however, many things to consider and numerous scams to be avoided! Make sure you know how to approach it, find advice, support and a community of your peers before you decide to take the leap.
Globally Women (Mothers in particular), senior citizens, the disabled and those who just find that the drudge of the 9-5 and the threat of being downsized, unemployed, or dependant on their local economy for the opportunity to work have been starting a quiet revolution at home from their humble pc's. They have been quietly and busily making their own opportunities and carving out a vital income for themselves and their families.
According to the UK Labour Force Survey, there are 2.2 million teleworkers in the UK - about 7.4% of the workforce. This is people who work at home at least one day per week.
That is just people who work for a company by phone at home, the actual figures for all those who work from home for a company or themselves could be 10 or 20 times as higher.
For many reasons women are more often than not excluded from the traditional 'world of work'. Typical contributing factors include: a general attitude of prejudice against women in managerial positions, manual labour jobs being virtually exclusively suited to the male physique and the genetically unavoidable role as women as the child bearers. However, these factors are far from limiting, they can simply be seen as a push in an ulterior direction. Speaking very generally, most men are very suited to 'typical; 9 till 5 office jobs. They enjoy the male company, the competitive environment, the structure, the change to flex their 'skills' as a peacock would flex his tail, the sense of rebellion against their boss when ever they steal office stationary. Women, however take a far more conservative and rational approach to work. Competition and status are less on a female's agenda than profit and efficiency. We take responsibility upon ourselves, enjoying the accountability that most men shy away from. Therefore the 'excluding' factors of working in a traditional 'mans world' combine with the broadly put speculation on feminine approach to work confirms that women are more suited to a somewhat overlooked work arena: could it be true that a woman's place is really in the home?
Working from home normally implies that you would take on the role as a small business manager. There are many exceptions to this; such as certain types of telephone operators, childminders, free-lance journalists etc. But these exceptions are not new and are not particularly exciting. The type of work from home that I am referring to, will go some way to alleviating personal alienation has only begun to really evolve in the last few years due to advances in technology, data sharing and internet access.
