Is Your Home Safe?

By Ras Reed

Our home is often seen as the best place to resort to from the hustling and busting of the modern world. Though this is very true, we're surely missing something out of the equation. That thing is a hidden danger lurking quietly in the seemingly protective confines of our home. This is the quality of the indoor air that we breathe in every day.

The act of breathing is common with us that we often don't notice it. We don't consider the air we inhale. Was there ever a time you stopped to consider the quality of the air you were inhaling?

It's so easy to notice the quality of the air you were inhaling if you're standing by the corner of a busy city sidewalk. You can't but stop to consider the sorts of dirt and dust molecules seeping into your body. But this is not often the case when you sit in your home. The quality of the air you're inhaling is not a big consideration.

But the fact of the matter is that that quality of the air in your room (even if it's always clean) is far poorer than that of the biggest, most industrialized, and dirtiest urban centers. In other words, the air in your room or home could be worse for your health and those of your loved ones than the air you inhale when travelling through New York City or Beijing or San Francisco. What is the cause of such indoor pollution? Cigarettes, cigars, paint, coal, furniture polish, cleaning fluids, asbestos, space heaters and so on are sources of hazardous particles in the home.

However, the gravity of the indoor pollution depends on whether or not there is adequate ventilation in the room. How much outdoor air comes in and vice versa? Poor ventilation in a home is a serious health threat to the inhabitants than a home with good ventilation. But that is not to suggest that a home with lots of open windows and excellent ventilation can't' be polluted. Certainly, it can be. Since most of us spend the larger part of our days inside, the build up of chemical and other air borne pollutants can be a source of serious health risk. This is often the case if the home is inhabited by the elderly, chronically ill or very young, or if they already have certain types of respiratory disease.

Response to indoor pollution varies depending on the type of contaminant. Biological pollutants can cause allergic reactions while types of tobacco and other contaminants can cause asthma attacks. Serious health problems can be caused by mold and mildews and the presence of carbon monoxide can even cause death if a detector is not in place and fully functioning.

The good news is that you don't have to live the rest of your life in a room or home filled with hazardous air. Recognizing the possibility of indoor air pollution is the first step toward creating a cleaner and better environment free of hazardous airborne particles. This is where air filters come into play. The air filter is meant to clean the air and give you clean and fresh air to breathe in.

There are many air filters out there that can take care of the air needs in the room or entire home. There are even portable ones that you can around from one room to another. Make sure you're fully informed about the different types of air filters out there before going out to get one for your room or home.
