The Blooming Buds

By Rahul viz

Amsterdam has the only floating flower market in the world, and one of the most fragrant places of interest during all seasons. The flower stalls stand on the houseboats. One can find there all sorts of tulips, narcissus and other bulbs and flowers. The bulbs are ready for export, so one can take them back and can enjoy them at home too. In December the market also sells green Christmas trees. This is the worlds only floating flower market with flower stalls on houseboats situated on the Singel between the Koningsplein and the Muntplein. It is open every day of the week and is a must to visit even just to see what all is on offer there. It is also a perfect place to stock up on bulbs.

Just sit back and imagine the Amsterdam Flower Market of the 1800's. Then, farmers sailed barges through the canals and peddled posies straight from their boats. Today, in the same area, Amsterdam' flower market is housed in fixed floating barges located along the Singel, one of the city's oldest canals. It will be a refreshing experience.

At present about fifteen plus florist and souvenir shops line the waterway, their colorful wares and postcard stands spilling out of the stores and on to the pavement. There is heaps of fresh flowers, mini cactus plants, potted herbs galore, and an absolute myriad of tulip bulbs packaged for export. These bulbs make incredible gifts for the flower enthusiast one knows and love. They are easy to carry, inexpensive, and come with "certificates of health" that will allow a person to pass custom regulations back home. However, these bulbs have to be packed in carry-on bag. These way inspectors can do their job without going through all your checked luggage Vendors' faces, floral arrangements and local passers-by provide great photo opportunities for the photo enthusiast.

The Flower Market is located in the heart of the city, near Kalverstraat, Leidsestraat and next to the Munt Tower. Inside the shops floating on barges on the Singel Canal there is everything flower-related, from seeds and bulbs to unique flowers such as black tulips. One can find flowers or bulbs in colors that have never been seen before. This is a great place to visit, even if a person does not plan to buy.
