A Recent Grad's Guide to Discount Men's Dress Shoes: Look Like a VP on an Entry Level Salary
By Michael Ray
For students who have spent the part of the last four years wearing sneakers and flipflops, the last dress shoes they wore were probably rented for a spring formal. But as graduation approaches many are preparing to join the work force. The following are some suggestions on how to look like a V.P. on an entry-level salary.
THE INTERVIEW
For the interview, keep things very buttoned-down. Assuming you're going to be wearing a suit, you can't go wrong with a classic pair of black dress shoes. Remember it's probably not bad to be a little more conservative for the interview and go with classic leather sole over rubber.
Examples:
Florsheim 18273 'Templin' Leather Oxfords Dress Shoes have genuine leather uppers for comfort and durability and a classic style that will never fall out of fashion. Leather-lining and a fully cushioned footbed provide a splendid interior and leather outsoles with non-slip heels blend high fashion with practicality.
For a more sophisticated look, Mezlan 2013 Wingtips are handcrafted in Spain, and feature genuine deerskin and leather uppers for the ultimate in style, comfort and durability. A lightly padded footbed in combination with a leather lining will keep your feet cool and comfortable even under the toughest interviews.
Always remember to keep your dress shoes polished and your heels unscuffed. And remember, your friends are all getting married soon, so you'll get your money's worth.
WEEKLY WEAR
Once you've landed the job, you can probably dress down a bit from your interview, as you want to be known for your performance, not your footwear. You'll want a couple of pairs of different colors, but you want to keep a professional look that will be in step with your office.
Accounting Firm/Office Job
This is probably a traditional office. Keep it simple – black, brown or oxblood work the best.
Examples:
Kenneth Cole 'Super Streak' with genuine leather uppers provides style, comfort and durability, and a generously cushioned footbed and durable outsole form a quality foundation.
Steve Madden 'Exel' shoes have a smooth leather upper and rubber sole that provides slip resistance and makes for a more comfortable commute to and from the train.
High Tech Company/ Advertising Agency
You may have a little more latitude here. Think a little outside the box. Try a loafer or something with a little heavier sole.
Examples:
You don't have to completely leave college behind with Dr. Martens '8C12' Leather Wingtips. These shoes have a traditional wing tipped leather upper but also feature Dr. Martens world famous air-cushioned sole, and trademark yellow stitching around the sole.
Comfortable and weather resistant Timberland 68582 'Cedar Breaks' Leather Sport Shoes have genuine leather uppers for comfort and durability. A generously cushioned footbed provides all-day comfort, and a non-slip rubber outsole is perfect for less-than-perfect weather.
Investment Bank
You're in the world where appearance is everything, and different is not necessarily good. You're making decent money so let it show on your feet.
Examples:
Bacco Bucci 'Columbo' Square-Toe Oxfords have a clean classic look with the comfort to go all day.
Ralph Lauren 'Carlson' Leather Oxfords are made in England with premium calf-leather uppers. A leather outsole and non-slip heel insert combines high fashion with practicality.
CASUAL FRIDAY
Here's your chance to show your funky side. Try something athletic-inspired that will go with your khakis or jeans and show that you're not always Mr. Shirt and Tie.
Examples:
Steve Madden 'Stryker' Leather Casual Sport Shoes are comfortable and go from the office to your evening plans without requiring a change of footwear.
If your office is super laid-back, try Medium's 'Expressionist' Slip-On Casual Shoes. A casual sporty slip-on with a Ballistic Fabric & Smooth Leather upper, a rounded toe, stitching accents, overlay detail and contrast colored stripe.
