Biking Bugs
By Rahul viz
One of the best ways to experience Amsterdam is by bicycle- it's a very bicycle friendly city. A few rental places provide a repair kit or even road service to fix a flat the chances of getting a flat are not remote in Amsterdam. One has to be very careful and never leave bicycle unattended or unattached to something. Just about everyone has had a bike stolen, it's a common headache. In many cases if a person's bike is stolen, most often that person will not be held liable. If one still have the keys, that person will get another bike immediately. But it is safer not to take that chance.
While renting a bicycle if one paying by cash a drivers license or passport has to be left behind, plus a deposit generally € 23. Credit cards make it simple. For weekly and longer term rentals the rates become cheaper and the longer a person rents, the cheaper it gets.
Apart from the standard no-speed Dutch bike, there is ample choice for 3 speed and mountain bikes, though in Amsterdam it is not needed. The best bet will be the typical Dutch clunker; though they are not great to look at, but are as strong as tanks and one can still glide for blocks. They're very friendly, and provide great personal service. If you're lucky you may even meet jovial Frederic the crazy biker.
Nearly half of all traffic movements in Amsterdam are by bike. The Dutch are proud of their biking culture and can being seen pedaling rain or shine through the city streets. Bike paths connect the entire country and cyclists are well respected on the roads, making cycling an efficient as well as healthy and environmentally friendly way to get around. See the city as it was meant to be seen atop two wheels. From the center of the old town to the picturesque canals and beyond just go cycling.
