Giving with Care on the Internet

By Stanley Park

Why is pixel advertising catching on as the most exciting advertising trend to hit the Internet in years?
The pixel concept is simple. A pixel ad page is comprised of a grid of one million pixels. Advertisers purchase the pixels in minimum 10x10 blocks for $1.00 per pixel, creating banners to display in them that link to their websites. Visitors enjoy pixel advertising web pages and sometimes spend hours checking out the links and generating traffic for advertisers. In the process, they raise the search engine ranking of the pixel web page, generating a stream of new visitors who continue to click through to their advertisers.

There are dozens of pixel advertising websites. While most are profit-oriented, seeking to capitalize on the hottest marketing trend, others take a more altruistic approach.
It isn't surprising that charities use the Internet to attract donations. But while the Web makes it easier to attract contributions, it also fosters scams that take advantage of our giving nature.

How can you be sure your contributions will go to an honest cause? The question is of concern to the pixel advertising website, PromoteCharity.com, which donates 40% of its revenues to charity. A pixel ad page is comprised of a grid of one million pixels. Advertisers purchase pixels in minimum 10x10 blocks for $1.00 per pixel, creating banners that link to their websites. Sponsors receive their advertising space for a full five years, promoting their idea or business while supporting a charitable project.

Sponsored by Hopscotch Technologies Ltd., a software provider for the financial industry, PromoteCharity.com states an exact percentage that will be given to charity. Other pixel advertising websites claim similar goals, but make only small pledges – typically around 10% of their revenue – to charity. They also don't specify the charity they will support.

The first PromoteCharity.com beneficiary is Foster Parents Plan, a child-centered, international development organization. A link on PromoteCharity.com points to the official site of Foster Parents Plan, while another link on the Foster Parents Plan website points to PromoteCharity.com. Visitors can learn about the Foster Parents Plan, which has been making a difference in the lives of children, their families and communities for over 67 years. They can also track the contributions made by PromoteCharity.com.
