Considering the Many Types of Air Purifiers

By Shawn Hart

If you are like the majority of the population, you spend most of your time indoors. Many people work indoors, most eat indoors, and everyone sleeps indoors. If you are one of the few people that spend all of their time outdoors, you have little to worry about when it comes to air quality, but for the rest of the population, in door air quality should be a concern. Because air indoors is not constantly moving and being circulated, many pollutants such as dust-mites, pollen, mold spores, and many others can drastically reduce the quality of the air in your home or office. Moreover, if you, like most people, suffer from any allergies, those pollutants can make life miserable. You might want to consider an air purifier to clean the air that your family breathes. But with so many types of air purifiers on the market, it may be a little overwhelming to decide what kind will be best for you and your family.

Air purifiers have come a long way in the past few years and there are many options available to clean the air in your home. Many air purifiers focus on one type of air purification while others apply multiple stages of air purification to clean the air as much as possible. As a general rule, air purifiers should have an electric fan that blows the air through the filters, because air purifiers without fans have proven to be less effective in general.

Ionizer air purifiers are actually not very effective alone. Ionizer air filters simply charge the particles that pass through it so that they either fall out of the air sooner or attach themselves to whatever it touches. Therefore, it is a good idea to get an air purifier that has at least one filter after the ionizer in order to catch all of the ionized pollutants. If used in this way, an ionizer air purifier can help a lot to clean the air.

High Efficiency Particle Arresting (HEPA) filters have shown to be extremely effective in reducing the amount of airborne pollutants. HEPA air purifiers have the ability to filter out 99.97% of pollutants in the air as small as 0.3 micrometers in size. Another advantage to HEPA filters is that they produce no ozone byproduct. It is important that when considering a HEPA air purifier it is called a "true HEPA" filter, because there are many filters which claim to be HEPA filters (usually called "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-like"), but are not true HEPA filters. It is also important to know that HEPA air purifiers can be very expensive so you may want to consider an air purifier that has a "pre-filter" to lengthen the life of the HEPA filter.

An "active carbon" air filter is made of oxygen treated charcoal with thousands of tiny pores which are able to catch gases and odors. Active carbon air-filters work like a sponge and are effective at trapping odors caused by automobile exhaust, cigarette smoke, pet odors, and many other unpleasant odors, gases, and chemicals in the air. Because active carbon air filters have such small pores and are only effective as long as they are not clogged, they need to be replaced more often than many other filters.

Ultra-violet Germicidal air-purifiers use powerful UV-C rays to eliminate bacteria, viruses, yeasts, and molds that exist in the air. UV air-purifiers are normally used in cooperation with other filters inside an air-purifier to kill any additional pollutants that may have made it through the other filters. UV Germicidal air-purifiers also can reduce the spread of tuberculosis, measles, influenza, smallpox, and other viruses.

Obviously, the best air purifiers actually incorporate each of these types of filters and stages to make the air as clean as possible. If you are looking for a less expensive model, be sure to shop around for the features you feel are best for your home or office. With a quality air purifier, you and your family will enjoy cleaner, fresher air and relief from allergies caused by the various air pollutants that exist in your home.
