Myths About Hair Growth
By Chimezie Frank
Most people who complain of little or no hair growth are blaming it on a lack of natural growth from the scalp when in reality the problem is that the hair is breaking off from the end for a variety of reasons.
If hair growth stops, baldness begins. And yet, you have people complaining that their hair has not grown at all over a period of years. Once hair stops growing, it eliminated by attrition. Therefore, as each hair shaft dies out due to the expiration of a normal life span of a hair shaft, which ranges from four to seven years, it will be replaced by another hair shaft.
Hair grows at the exact rate as fingernails, and just as your fingernails break due to normal day-to-day activity, maintaining only a certain length, the hair shaft reacts the same way due to misuse, combing, brushing, perms, tints, relaxers, pressing and hot curling. Because hair breaks off at the same rate as the hair grows from the scalp, natural hair growth usually goes unnoticed.
Any treatment designed to promote longer hair must start with a hair cut before application because you must eliminate any damaged ends, or they wick continue to split down the entire hair shaft, breaking off completely. By continuing to trim your ends every four-to-six weeks, you will soon notice considerably longer hair.
Do perms and relaxers help the hair grows?
No, however, many people claim increased hair growth because the restructuring portion of the procedure relaxed out their natural kink. However, the primary reason behind this belief is the hair cut which takes place prior to the perm. As split ends will not curl, they must be eliminated. The bottom line is that chemical services do not strengthen hair; they weaken hair.
Can split ends be permanently sealed?
When the ends of the hair shaft are split, the hair shaft is dead from the ends down to where the split ends. When the hair shaft splits, the medulla structure and the cells dry out, leaving an empty shell of cuticle and cortex fibre. At this point, the hair shaft cannot absorb nutrients. No matter how it is manipulated with permanent cold wave products, a split hair shaft cannot be permanently curled. Hair straightening relaxers will dissolve the split ends and hot curling irons and pressing combs will burn them off, stimulating additional split cuticles. Products claiming to seal split ends only temporarily coat them, creating a cosmetic cover-up that may appear sealed until hair is shampooed, combed or brushed, in which the ends come apart continuing to split further down the hair shaft until the split is controlled.
How to control ends and achieve noticeable hair growth
The only way to control spit ends is to cut the hair just below the area where the split ceases. Then growth can start with a healthy hair shaft by which normal, natural hair growth can continue unencumbered. Once cutting eliminates the split ends, you have healthier hair in less than three months.
