SexTalkRadio: Encouraging Smart Choices in Sex, Love, and Relationships

By Elisabeth Lawrence

"The struggle with relationships is universal, but it particularly resonates with college students," says Mike Goss, Founder of www.SexTalkRadio.org, an Internet radio station and information-rich website that focuses on sex, love, and relationships. "They are at a stage where they're making key decisions that will determine the outcome of their lives for decades to come and possibly forever."

That's why two of SexTalkRadio's four call-in shows are designed specifically for college-age audiences. "Sunday Night Live," which airs from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. CDT, features Goss and a female collegiate co-host and tackles topics such as, "The Key to Incredible Sex – Found in, of All Places, the Bible." "Relationship Tuesdays with Dr. K.," a show that occupies the same time slot on Tuesdays, also reaches out to the college crowd but features a relationship counselor co-host who can parry callers' questions. "When it comes to sex, it's never too late to start making smart choices," says Goss.

Research backs up Goss' strategy of reaching young adults via an Internet radio talk show, which he anticipates will reach millions of college students. In a study by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, 73% of young adults ages 18 to 24 reported learning about sexual health issues from media sources.

Although Goss, the founder of Abstinence America, sees SexTalkRadio as a ministry, he doesn't dismiss the un-churched. "Whether you come from a religious background or not, you can still see the effects of poor choices in relationships. Whatever your age, gender, socioeconomic background or race, we all stand on a level playing field when it comes to this topic."

As someone on the lecture circuit who regularly speaks to college crowds, Goss speaks with authority when he says, "Hands down, the vast majority of young adults are going to be successful in their careers." Yet he's doubtful that they will enjoy that same level of success in achieving meaningful relationships. "They have a strong focus on their educations and careers, but they've neglected this other piece of the puzzle."

That's the piece that Goss plans to provide through programming on SexTalkRadio. "A miserable marriage, a loveless marriage, a divorce, an out-of-wedlock birth, or a lifetime sexually transmitted disease are all things that can and will diminish the value of their hard-earned accomplishments," he adds.

When Goss tackles these issues, he speaks from experience. As a former sex addict, Goss says, "I'm not talking theory here, or about something I've read in a book. Unfortunately, I have first hand knowledge of the devastation poor sexual choices can bring." Open about his shortcomings, Goss says that he has been happily married for only nine years, although this year he and his wife will be celebrating their 25th year of marriage, and adds, "But the good news is seven of those nine good years have been the last seven. What I learned is that we made a lot of mistakes out of ignorance and innocence in the beginning of our relationship that came back to haunt us. We were on the verge of calling it quits when my life was touched by God, and since then our relationship has never been the same."

Goss' personal experiences lay the foundation for the other two programs on SexTalkRadio, Saturday night's "Breaking Free," to help people struggling with pornography and sex addictions, and Friday's "Relationship Fridays with Dr. K.," for more mature adults' relationship issues.

"I try to take these heavy subjects and add a touch of humor in order to deliver what sometimes amounts to very hard truths," says Goss. "I believe my enthusiasm, energy, and entertaining style will open listeners' ears and hearts to my message. From my counseling experience, it is my sincere belief that the majority of people die and go to an empty grave while never experiencing the love and companionship they so desperately want. I want to help change that."
