Memory in Student Life

By Robert E

Especially students should possess sharp memory as it subsists throughout their student life. Even though others have the same sharp memories at the tender age but as they become older, they start losing a major part of this memory So it is the duty of the teachers to correct them at this juncture. The usual causes for such loss of memory are 1. Family circumstances. 2. Lack of good training by parents, guardians or teachers. 3. Improper medical care.
If a student receives good nutrition and medical care, also facilities definitely there is every chance that his memory will develop along normal lines.
There are students who have to work hard also. I have seen many students working in a factory or a hotel and studying during the rest period. Their restlessness is a deterrent to their memory. There may be lack of confidence due to fear and some other complex. Whoever it may be, teacher or guardian cannot force him to remember something whith his mind or brain refuses to take in.
Memory exercises helps a student to improve memory or develop memory. Link method is certainly helpful. Abbreviation method and story method are appealing. Addition and story association is another useful method; say for example if a student has to remember the years 1492 and 1498 which denote the events 'columbus discovered America ' and Vasco da Gama reached cape of Good Hope respectively, put the English alphabets for there two years A is 1 B is 2, C is 3 and so on.
Therefore 1492 becomes ADIB and 1498 is ADIH
Here ADIB has B and Columbus has B
So ADIB goes with Columbus or 1492 is for Columbus and the other is for Vascoda Gama. In this fashion they are easily remembered.
While remembering numbers students has to invent his own methods and remember three different sections 33, 00 and 918.
Here he can easily remember a33 as they make out that 3 X 3 = 9 and 3 X 6 = 18 writing 918. Then it will be easy for him to remember the sequence 918.
Peculiar numbers can be easily remembered
Eg : 13 26 39 Here the first section is 13 second section is 13 X 2 = 26 and the third 13 X 3 = 39.
There are thus various ways of remembering a number and each person has to find out his own suitable way.
Students have a good lot to read. They have to read text books. They have to understand a lot while they read. The college students have to remember much of what they read. A student's real possession is his memory.
Memory in reading
Reading involves both fast reading and slow reading. Students, as they have to face examinations they have to practice both readings. However, fast reading is not the best way to prepare for an examination. Reading involves understanding. Reading for a student is not for recreation or enjoyment. The mind has to digest what is read. Any one who is reading something on the subject of his choice will find a harmony between reading and understanding. An efficient reader or a good reader, in case of students, is he who has mastered the art of concentration.
There are four ways through which reading speedily and understanding quickly is made possible. They are ( 1 ) attention ( 2 ) interest ( 3 ) points and ( 4 ) pictures.
Concentration breeds attention. Practice reading for sometime everyday. There may be some noise or other external phenomena. This has to be overcome by having a strong and attentive mind. Also one has to practise concentration even in solitude. It is always recommend learning by understanding, not by rote. First read the book slowly. Always keep a pencil and dictionary handy. While you read constantly ask the questions what, why, when, where, who, how etc. underline the important points, facts and figures. This carefully. Naturally mind takes an account of it and you can easily remember.
Make notes in your own words. Reproduce your notes from memory later. While you try to reproduce from memory your mind will pay extra attention next time to the subject which you had forgotten. The notes prepared shall be as less as possible. Again write the points forgotten first time. This process takes you about five days. Next day pay attention to the important questions. But reproduce your notes for the questions from the memory alone.Read the book also which enables you to answer better. Revision of the book with the help of your notes is essential. In the examination hall students have to select the questions they know best. Let them proceed to answer the first question accordingly. Let the mind be given the task of preparing answer to the first ! This process is to be continued. Like speed reading of a book, speed read each answer to check for mistakes and additional information which memory bring afresh.
