Diamond Setting

By Rachana Agarwal

Diamonds are forever. No other stone can match its brilliance and radiance. When it comes to inserting your new diamond in a setting, a couple of things have to be taken into consideration.

Material of prongs – The selection of prongs entirely depends upon your choice. People generally prefer gold or platinum. Because of their strength, platinum is a wanted metal as it is resistant to any kind of wear and tear. They are also heavier than gold. Gold prongs can get bent and over time wear down.

Number of Prongs – The more the number of prongs will be the more your diamond get secured. So, the number of diamonds will entirely on your desire. It is a matter of taste.

Ring material – The material of the ring is based on personal choice of the wearer. It is also greatly depended upon the taste and budget. Nowadays, white gold and platinum has emerged as the most suitable choice for the ring material. Let's discuss them in brief:

Platinum
Derived from Latin word, platina, platinum is a silver-white metallic element, usually ductile and malleable in nature and mixed with other elements. Unlike gold, a soft metal which hardened after mixing other elements, platinum is nearly 95 per cent pure. Because of its nature, platinum is getting popularity in the market as it is used in making fine jewels. Besides, platinum has many advantages over gold. First, it is more scratch protector and will not have a longer life. Secondly, it is much heavier than gold that's make it a major piece of jewelry. Thirdly, platinum holds its shape and color as it gets older much better than gold. Because of these reasons, platinum has emerged as a true metal king that matches its aura with diamonds gracefully.

White gold
White gold is the mixture of pure gold with other white metals such as silver, nickel, palladium and platinum. It is silvery white in color. After its electroplating with rhodium, the color of white gold looks whiter than its natural white. White gold can also be transformed into various applications as per the need. If a hard metal is needed it can be mixed with nickel or if a softer metal is needed for setting stones it can be mixed with palladium. So remember not all white gold is the same.

Yellow Gold
Diamonds are also associated with the yellow gold. A variety of yellow gold in different ring setting is available in the market to match the different taste of people. But, these days, the diamonds in yellow gold seems to be quickly losing ground.
