Why are we so lazy?
By Riggs Owen
Have you noticed how lazy we've become lately? I think Andy Rooney did a small blurb about this on 60 minutes a couple of months ago but some things that I've observed and experienced over the past few days has got me thinking again about how sedentary we've really become.
Example: over this last weekend, my wife and two kids spent a good part of Saturday attempting to uncover the mystery of the missing TV remote. This is about the third time that this has happened in the past few weeks. As we grunted and groaned while tipping the 200+ pound coach over to see if we could shake loose this all-important gagdet, i kept thinking to myself, i'd rather just stand up and go turn up the TV volume than subject myself to this type of physical labor! Turns out we did eventually find it, only to discover that the on/off buttom to the remote had disappeared.
Later that weekend at the gas station, i went to get some gum, and while waiting for the cashier to hand me back my change, i took notice of a new Listerine product. You know, the one where you lay the thin little strip on your tongue???? For the love of God, what this means is that someone had to have invented this novel product because the American public has determined that it took too much strength to suck on a breath mint!
What is it that drive us to create these type of products? Are we just continuing the proud tradition of American ingenuity and keeping alive the innovative process or are we just trying to save ourselves from having to get up from the couch? Recent statistics published by the FDA have indicated that an alarming 1 out of 4 people in this country are now considered either overweight or obese. This extra weight that we've put on also has had a significant impact on our healthcare spending where obesity related costs are rising disproportionately as a percentage of the total spending.
It has also been reported that teen obesity is on the rise. Based on my own personal observation, I have noticed an inordinate number of rather plump looking kids in our immediat neighborhood that i would probably have never seen when i was growing up. I am also noticing this same trend when picking up my son or daughter at school. While I don't consider myself a keenly observational type person, if my dull radar is noticing a trend like this, something must be up.
The advent of technology such as game consoles, 200 channel cable/satellite TV, and the internet have definitely affected the flavor of activity that our young kids participate in. Heck, my daughter sometimes spends hours on the laptop IMing her friends and I'm thinking to myself, "why don't you just go see them?". Oh well, logic has no place in the real world.
